My cars going in for a remap at MLS tomorrow. Looking forward to the improvements and the drive home but when I made the booking they told me I had to pay the balance in cash.
Is this normal practice for them? I don’t mind, I don’t love carrying that much cash but not the end of the world. I just wondered why they insist on this method?

thanks

I'm assuming that you mean MSL Performance (not MLS)?

If so then no, it's not the usual thing. I've paid cash, cards, cheques and even the odd few swaps to them over the years, so no idea why they told you this? I'd be tempted to ring again and confirm it with Acid himself as, like you say, carrying a lot of cash around, especially in that particular area, would not exactly inspire me with confidence.

Yes I do mean MSL Performance in Birmingham, sorry.
Yes I thought it was strange. Ok will see if I can dig out Acids number online and give him a call. Thanks for clarifying.

Ok spoke to Acid. He said there’s no requirement to pay cash, it’s an option but not a requirement. So that’s fine, if I decide to pay cash for any reason I can always get it out on the day.

thanks for your help

When I spoke to them and asked if the price they quoted was inc. vat, they said that's a 'cash price', which I thought was weird. Is it more by card?!

They also do this 0% finance thing which is 100% guaranteed approved with no credit check... obviously they will be partnering with a company to do that, but still, it's weird. How can credit be done without a credit check, and how can you guarantee acceptance?

Not that I think they're dodgy, just it's unclear.

Yeah it’s all a bit odd. I was quoted 450 for the dyno remap and that’s when they said cash, but Acid said I could pay any way, if I needed a vat invoice etc. I don’t know, we’ll see tomorrow I guess.

Im here waiting for my MOT and the gearbox service to be completed before the remap. All seems ok with regards to
Payment. Basically what you said is the case and I paid cash no problems. Looking forward to it being done in a few hours

I was asked for, and paid in cash for my remap in November. Made no difference either way to me at the time but should anyone wish to stick it on their cc it should be made clear other payment methods are OK. The receptionist was asking for cash when I booked it.

Hope you get a chicken dinner and enjoy the remapping experience.

I'm surprised with the questions about cash payments, seems quite obvious why they would prefer cash, paper trail killer. Kerching.

My question wasn’t so much about why, I understood that, it was the fact that originally I was incorrectly told that I could only pay cash, which obviously isn’t the case

So today didn’t exactly go to plan.

I was there all day while they did the MOT, then the gearbox service then onto the mapping.
The mapping was carried out what looked like successfully. The outcome was 322hp and 709nm.
Unfortunately, there were a number of errors on the car thrown up afterwards. After driving it most were just down to the various systems needing resetting by driving but the multifunction camera system that controls speed limit assist won’t get rid of the error and message on the dash.

Acid said that he’s seen it before and my software needed to be updated. Unfortunately it was nearly 5pm by that time so I’ve had to find a cheap hotel nearby so it can be done in the morning.
The map was put back to standard and will be mapped again after the software update.

my main concern is that after putting the map back to normal, the error was still there which implies To me there’s an actual fault there. Which wasn’t there before and speed limit assist was working fine.
So I’m a little frustrated I have to say. More money on a hotel, not being able to get home for what I needed to do etc etc.

I can’t fault the fact they have gone out their way to try to help and they are a really nice bunch of people but I’m still frustrated

Very unfortunate having a software glitch that was unknown until the map was applied.
Unless cleared ,the error will stay until the software update is applied so returning the map to stock won't clear the message on its own.

Glad to see you got some good gains from the map beforehand. Acid will sort it out, its just a shame to have inconvenienced you and taken the shine off what would have been a good day otherwise.

Don't venture out tonight in Small Heath. The Peaky Blinders will get you:D

Yes, I'd imagine that (like lots of companies) some of the cash transactions may never hit the books... you'd think they'd offer you less for a cash price...

Sorry to hear about the issues - a pain and something to think about if you aren't local. I'm assuming you started with a 265BHP car? Even if so, those are surprisingly monster gains.

I saw the post with your car on the MSL instagram - looks beautiful!

Please keep us updated!

well here’s the weird thing which I didn’t mention. When they did the before dyno, it came out at around 290hp. Which is strange. They reckon that someone could have put a map on there before that wasn’t great. If you’ve seen my other posts you’d have seen that I’ve had a few other minor driveability problems which could be explained if a bad map was on the car.

as for the original starting power, I would have assumed than when then overwrote any map that was on there, then yes I was effectively starting from 265hp. So unless my car somehow came from the factory which increased power which is unlikely, then there must have been some history I didn’t know about.

also it means that the new map probably won’t feel as drastic as it might have otherwise done.
But new day today, let’s see how things turn out

It’s not uncommon for issues to appear and a new version of the software to be uploaded. It could be that dependant upon how the new map is written is dependant upon the latest software being on the car. I had exactly the same with my CLS and as soon as the new software was uploaded the codes went and the new map installed with zero issues. Mine is a 2011 and I think a different version was applied from late 2012/13 with minor updates thereafter.

Stand by, he might have popped out to the cash machine . :p.

I have mates in the trade who offer 'cash' prices , and when the work is complete they are handed a card, or even a cheque ! It is usually Millennial's who offer the card and the 'elderly' who offer the cheque. Both missing the whole point of the word 'cash' for some reason.

One of my mates is frantically trying to convert a stash of £20 notes before the change comes in (6 months)...I suggested he should give it to HMRC. He didn't think that was funny.
