[MOANING] warnings on old tv programmes

Is it just me or does anyone else get annoyed by the "warnings" that get put on old tv progs when they are shown today such as "this prog was made in xx and reflects the language and attitude of the times and which might offend some viewers"

Been watching a lot of old stuff on rewind tv and to me the warnings are offensive!

I’m really not bothered in the slightest.

I enjoy old TV.

I’m a fairly easy-going sort of chap, but this is something that winds me up no end? Who on Earth is it for? Do they really think we can’t figure that out for ourselves?! Aaaargh!

I do find the present trend of warnings a real irritant, but what's worse is that crucial scenes in old classic films are being cut to protect sensitivities. I'd rather that they screened a film uncut even if it meant having warnings.

On a similar theme, after the recent death of Dame Maggie Smith, I was surprised not to see one of her most famous films in the TV schedules given it was the one for which she won her first major award - The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. Surprised that is until I watched it in full on YouTube. No question she deserved her awards but the sexual exploitation of school girls was a theme I'd forgotten about. While it doesn't seem to be getting a screening at all on terrestrial TV, if it did it would be cut for sure.

Weren't the closing credits a lot of women chasing Benny at high speed so wouldn't be allowed either? What really annoys me is when they have modern programmes showing "old" TV and woke talking heads showing faux outrage at the un-pc humour. Idiots!

I have been trying for ages (in vain) to buy a used 1970's black and white TV set so I can watch all the programmes I missed back then.

And yet Open All Hours, and similar progs (often full of racist comments) goes unwarned about. Strange that eh?. I've also noticed that US car shows have the word bitchin' bleeped out. Pathetic.

I don't find myself irritated by the "trigger warnings", but I do shake my head in disbelief (metaphorically) that we have - apparently - managed to advance our society to the stage that there is an influential cohort who are unable to accept that societal views and language change over time, and who are so mentally fragile that they can't cope with the "shock" of being reminded of those facts.

On the subject of Till Death Us Do Part, one of my favourite rants by Alf was when he was explaining to Tony Booth how Liverpool FC and Everton FC were paid for by the State, because all their supporters were unemployed and paid for their tickets using their dole money

Brilliant satire, completely misunderstood by so many today.

The more educated "we" become, the dumber we get.

My dearest daughter would be aghast at the programme, failing to understand that it's a satire by a brilliant, very left wing writer, with a lead "Tory" character played by a middle class, intellectual, North London Spurs (not West Ham) supporter of Jewish Russian origin, born "Warren Misel," with strongly left wing political values. (Who was a nipper of 40 when it was recorded in late 1964)

While my parents, who left school barely able to read, roared with laughter at the satire and the characatures.

But hey, with two science degrees, she doesn't understand all this Starmer Class War and Politics, Philosophy and Economics stuff.

One of life's ironies.

The combination of the individual acting performances (Dandy Nichols was always worth watching for her well-timed pithy interjections while "just" eating boiled sweets), the ensemble cast and the brilliant writing made Till Death one of the iconic TV comedies. Such a pity that so many have become so "educated" that they are unable to appreciate it for what it is (was).
