The wife is understandably sick of driving the Zafira (cant blame her after 5 years) and as she only has my daughter to take to school now, she says she fancies a little 'stylish' runabout. She has even professed to liking the SLK. So saw this SLK on ebay today, its in Kent, appears straight,FSH with a recent service and the seller seems a decent sort, so couldnt resist a bid!....

Looks like the SWMBO Christmas present is going to take some wrapping if I get it!

Just in case it does go cheap, and I get it, any advice on sepcific things to look out for? ( I shall of course do some searching on here)

Any guesses what price it will go for? Ive seen a similar one go fro £4050 last week which if it has no serious problems thats 90's MX5 money!.

Nice, lucky Mrs Crammy. At the right money, will be a good buy.

AFAIK pretty solid cars, if it has a good history, go for it.

Make sure the roof works properly. Also make the roof go through its open and close cycle weekly, regular use seems to be good for them.

My dad owned one from new back in 1998 ? for 7 years and only swapped it for a SL

It was his weekend car / few trips to france, sold on 70k miles.

Didn't need a thing except the service and tyres.

Only thing with it was the interior (red and black) was showing signs of wear. Great car though and as you say for MX5 money as long as its a good one its cheap motoring.

Think black looks more for the blokes, but does show any marks. Silver easy to keep clean :)

Yes thats the thing that may need looking at, as its the black/beige interior thers likely to be some wear, although I rememebr there was a thread a while back saying you can get some vinyl spray to disguise (if not cure) it.

    Fingers crossed!

I had a 230 Kompressor in linarite blue with a cream two tone interior for a while. Only ever had to service it in the 23,000 mile I covered in it.

The only real area I thought was a little iffy quality wise was the light cream interior. It was easy to chip the paint finish on the plastictrim, e.g. door handles, centre console and glove compartment, particularly if the other half wears rings etc. However if the car in question has a dark interior then this won't show as easily.

Oh and I also had the alloy wheels refurbished as the lacquer started to lift, but I had that done on warranty.

Finally just check the hood works as it should.

Aside from that I thoroughly enjoyed the time I had with it. Your wife will love it. :)

Check around boot handle/lock for rust. Beware if you find any. Owners Club Technical Director has had lots of trouble with his after discovering this.

NO way would I just bid, especially if its only 20 miles away ???

I've just driven 500 mile trip to collect a new van, cars I have driven the same (and even over to europe)

If its right its worth it. Some perople also list condition of excellent and their version is somewhat different to mine :)

Airscarf is a must have option on these cars in the UK. Check that your one has this. Heated seats is nice as well.
Other options are obvious which you will be aware.

Yup - not there for the 170 ;) But a hat and normal scarf do very nicely :) But the one being looked at does not have heated seats - but then it is cheap as chips.

Like Xenons, it can be done but its very expensive and frankly not financially viable as a retrofit. If you want them then buy a car with them already fitted.

Amazes me that people who spec a convertible from new never choose them.

They are only about £300 on 25K car? not much..

Guess its people who have never had convertibles before or your fair weather types :)

Heated seats are, quite simply, one of the best car gadgets ever. Anyone who has had them, just knows... My old bargain barge Volvo had them, and they were great... 2mins down the road on a cold morning and... mmmm!
