The problem is that the aircon only works if the inside of the car (1996 C180) is stiflingly hot. It wont work first thing in the morning, but if it is left standing in the sunshine for an hour or two on a hot day, then it works fine.

I'm thinking a five quid sensor that will cost five hundred to replace because it is buried in the innards of the heater/evaporator area

Any ideas ladies and gents?

Could be the temp sensor in the overhead dome light ; hopefully not a £500 job to repair if that's the case - but this is just a guess !

I left it parked in dull sunshine for three hours today, and the inside of the car was hottish but not stifling. After turning on the a/c, I heard another blower start, but the a/c clutch didn't engage. Turning the a/c switch on and off a few times showed that this second blower is definitely tied to the a/c. No cooling though. :(

try fan control relay under the passenger wheel arch
