More issues with brakes?

Hi All,

I posted on here back in August regarding a clicking noise I was getting from my wheels on my 2015 E220:

I took it back to Halfords, who originally did the work, and after confirming there was a noise, they sorted it by installing new pads and discs on all the wheels and the noise went away.

Now fast foward to today and there's a new noise developed. It's a metal on metal clank once per revolution of the wheels, it could be mistaken for driving over a loose manhole cover, even though I wasn't driving on one. It can be heard only when my windows are open and only happens when I'm driving really slow, such as being in Drive but not touching the accelerator and it goes away when I speed up. No difference going over bumps or turning. Checked under the car, assuming something was caught, and nothing. I called the AA out because it sounded like something was loose.

The AA chap turned up, jumped into my car with me to drive around the block and he could hear it coming from the front drivers side wheel. He takes a look and can't see anything. Jacks it up, spins the wheel and nothing. He then removes the wheel, and notices that when he's turning it with his hands on the disc, it's getting really stiff at one point, the same point every revolution. When it's getting stiff, he notices the brake pad on the inside of the disc is moving out, and then moves back in when it's looser. There's also a click noise when the pad moves out, not anywhere near as loud as what I was hearing though. He's saying there's an issue with uneven wear on the disc and that I need to take it back to Halfords for them to sort it again, and that click is what I will be hearing, it will get amplified when driving (can anyone confirm that?) No other sounds are being made from it, so it must be that click, and it's not right as it should be the same friction all the way around the disc, fair enough.

So I managed to book a free brake check with the garage tomorrow, so I'll see what they say. In the mean time, I'm wondering whether anyone else had a similar issue and what it turned out to be? Defective brake disc? Issue with the caliper?

Personally I would not trust the 12 year old in Halfords to top my washer bottle up let alone work on my brakes......maybe its just me!!

It's been over to Halfords this morning, got the call to come and collect it. They've said that they heard the clicking noise when they lifted it up, they've fully disassembled it, put it back together and the clicking is now gone, great! Jumped in my car, the noise is still there.

Went back and got their chap to get in the passenger seat and took him round the car park and said he could hear it also. Maybe it's something separate to that clicking, to be honest I wasn't confident it was that anway. He's said it's totally safe to drive, and to bring it back in on Monday.

It's really itermittent though. Only happens at slow speeds, but not constantly. It may occur 10 times in quick succession, and then nothing for 20 seconds, and then another 1 clink. It always happens though when I'm coming to a complete stop right before the car has fully stopped.

So centrifugal forces created by speed reduce it or stop (road noise could be masking it?)

To be fair to Halfords, as long as the parts being used are decent quality, working on brakes with the correct tools, ramp access and a modicum of knowledge / training shouldn't be beyond them. They are at least continuing to look into it and not dismissing you as I once had...

Parts quality along with correct spec'd pins are one of many issues I came across when we had a sticking caliper on an unMerc a few years ago (wasn't a Halfords garage then)

I've been out again in my car, it definitely sounds like something loose possibly inside the wheel could the air pressure sensor or something come loose and be rattling around inside?

it's getting really stiff at one point, the same point every revolution. When it's getting stiff, he notices the brake pad on the inside of the disc is moving out, and then moves back in when it's looser.
This is the bit I don’t understand, how can the pad move in and out ?
Is he saying the disc is warped, if it was it would be easy to spot.
Has anyone checked the wheel bearing or changed the wheels around to see if the noise moves away?

He said the disc could be warped, it's as if there's a section of the disc that's thicker and pushes the pad away. Halfords are saying its not warped and everything looks normal.

I'm convinced it's something loose inside the wheel now though, I'm just going to get them to take the tyre off to see.

Make sure you let us know the outcome.

Got my car back from Halfords, they have no idea what it is. They confirmed it's definitely coming from the front driver side though.

Managed to get a recording of it, this was while going straight on a flat surface, in drive with feet off pedals going from a complete stop to around 8mph and with the window open.

I've uploaded the file to my Google Drive, saves anyone having to download that zip file

Why don’t you swap the wheels round to see if the noise follows?

The issue is now sorted.

Took it to Kwik-Fit and left it with them for the day. When I dropped it off, I wanted to show the bloke the noise but he refused, said they'd be able to hear it. Had a call around midday saying they think it's the bearings so they've tightened them up, pop down and see if the noise has gone. Went down, drove it round their car park and it was still there. Once I pointed the noise out, the technician was instantly saying it was the rear wheel despite both the AA and Halfords saying it was the front.

So I stayed with them to help diagnose it. They first thought it was stones that the tyre was kicking up to the exhaust and they were happy to send me on my way. When I explained it's only coming from the one side and I have exhaust outlets on both sides, they stuck some cardboard to cover it and it was still making the noise. That then prompted them to take the wheel off and roll it and they heard the noise. They took the tyre off and found a small piece of metal inside that looked like it would be a weight, but no idea why it was inside and it was nothing like the weights they use - it was these guys who put my rear tyres on 2 months ago.

Their manager was very apologetic, took full responsibility for it as it was their fault. Even went as far as questioning why no one took the time for me to point the noise out to them despite me offering. Can't really fault AA, but Halfords don't seem to have a clue what they were doing despite claiming they could hear the noise. But even Kwik-fit were happy to send me on my way so moral of the story is to stand your ground.

To me the moral is to stay away from Halfords and Kwik Fit.

I have a Kwik Fit about 75 yards from my house and I wouldn't my car there for anything if my life depended on it.

You could do some comic videos,
oil in the windscreen wash,
anti freeze on icy windows,
WD40 on squeaky wipers.

I'll bet the customers would do some daft things too.

To be honest i did use Kwik Fit for a couple of tyres recently as they were much cheaper (Good Year Eagle Assym 5's). However i took the loose wheels to them and watched them. I wouldn't even trust them to jack up the car and take the wheels off to be honest. Saying that, they did do the tyres well and took a lot of care.

I'm always nervous when going anywhere for tyres. So many places don't bother to locate the correct jack points, but just shove a jack under anywhere and get going. Let alone when the jack the rear end and just start going at it wherever!😲

Halfords for pushbikes
Kwikfit for tyres & exhausts
Not exactly diagnostic emporiums
