MoT Fail AND Pass.

I was not provided with the Advisory when I bought my car, just a green certificate.

Just checked details at motinfo.direct.gov.uk and it shows that my vehicle failed and then passed at the same MoT centre, for the same issues, on the same day, at the same mileage!!

The issues my car failed on are still current!

Failed the first test for broken lamp and this was not mentioned on the second test though it is still broken:
Nearside Front position lamp not working (1.1.A.2b)

Advisory Notice issued:
Nearside Rear wheel bearing slight play.
Centre, Rear, Front Exhaust slightly deteriorated.

Would anyone like to offer constructive and accurate advice regarding this please?

I bought privately and i'm going to contact the seller but before doing so, I need to be fully informed. Ideally I'd like to claim the costs for having the lamp and exhaust replaced.

Many thanks,

Hi-Ho

The front position lamp could be just a bulb blown. They would have done it there and then hence the same milage. Is the bulb still blown?

Advisorys are just that. Advisorys not failures.

I don't see the point in contacting the previous owner for the advisorys as it is a used car and bought privatly.

Exactly as above there could be a problem that is continually blowing the bulb, could have been changed after the failure and blown again shortly after.

Advisory's are exactly that advising the owner of potential problems that may occur in the near future.

As the car was bought privately you have no come back at all with the seller.

What year is your car out of interest?

I once had a car failed for a blown bulb - I had the fail paperwork and then the guy asked if I'd get one from the garage on the way home, I said sure.. he then gave me the MOT pass.
I forgot to get the bulb done for a couple of weeks.

Thanks for your input.

It's a 2000 Clk230k w208.

The glass lens is cracked so it's likely that it would need replacing. I know I can get the glass alone.

It's just that it failed, then passed as an advisory which is raising my suspicions. Also, as I said earlier, I was not given the fail notice or advisory notice, just the green pass cert with a 'yes' in the advisory box. I though provision was a legal matter, not a choice.

I assume this is a joke right?
You bought a used car privately - presumably with an opportunity to have it inspected fully if you had chosen to - and now you expect the seller to pay for replacement of an exhaust that is listed as an MOT advisory because it is slightly deteriorated?

Hmm good luck with that one - you would not even succeed with that if you had bought a recent used car from a main dealer.

I'm a little confused are you saying that the head light glass is cracked? If so as long as it did not affect the beam pattern then this would be an advisory not a fail.

When sellng a car there is no legal requirement to provide the fail sheet or advisory sheet, just the MOT certificate.

Also beware of VOSA data and checks it is not always correct, they are about as good at keeping records as the DVLA

If you have a gripe go back to the test centre and ask to speak to the MOT tester, get him to dig out all the info on the car off his VOSA computer and go through it with him why it failed and suddenly passed it will all be logged, VOSA are sh*t hot at enforcement.

We have had a few enquiries from buyers checking a cars history it does not take 2 minutes and if the test centre has nothing to hide they will do it gladly. If you think there are any problems report it to VOSA and they will investigate for sure,

But IMHO you are worrying about nothing

Our old Audi A4 passed the MOT with a cracked headlight lens (with an advisory). It can eventually lead to a fail if water gets in and the reflector corrodes.

Are you sure its not a fog lamp that is cracked?

If so they are not an MOT item.

MOT Testers Guidlines for Front position lamps below, If foglights are incorporated into the front position lamp unit then they are included in the MOT as below.

I have a feeling he didn't like our answers and decided to shoot the messenger...

I'm sorry - I'm actually embarrassed that I'm writing this. However I can remember when I was a noob, got a new merc, joined a merc forum, asked a question that maybe those who knew more, and who were a little wiser would be able to answer and thus would be able to put me on the correct path. He probably knew what the real answer was, but thought those with experience may hold a hidden answer... He certainly didn't expect a flurry of stuck up rude backsides.

The guys bought a second hand merc and then found it failed one of it's mots over certain issues and so asks on here ( a reputable merc forum ) what he probably already knows, hoping that someone may answer with some knowledge that Is privy to an enthusiast ( merc or car)

No!! what he gets is a series of pnarr pnarrs from those that should know

Well it must be great to be so fantastic...!!!

He asked for the advice and we gave it. On a plate. No rudeness from what I can see.

Blackc55... Apologies... I seemed to read the rude replies and then shoot from the hip. Apologies to those people. I honestly did flick through, the rude replies caught my attention and I typed.

Your replies and others are as I come to expect from you, very honest and supportive.

Regards.
