Motor Show cancelled

Taking it away from London was the start of the rot. And compounded by the downturn in new vehicle sales, its hardly surprising.
And apart from that, I have NEVER EVER seen the point of queuing up and paying to look at cars while being jostled and pushed by hoards of leaflet collectors.

I use to go to the Birmingham NEC and Earls Court each year.

When some of the Larger car manufactures pulled out of these a few years ago its not supprising. Also The excel one? or what ever its called in London, why do people think everything should be there....(oops your from that neck of the woods :)

I love them, but for the past serveral years we have gone to the Geneva Show which probably works out cheaper and more new cars are shown. Its also generally not that busy.

Since I could say car I have attended these shows, love them. Love looking at the concept cars and cars I will never own but nice to look at. Even cars that you would never go to the showroom to look at but make you think while your there.

So for me while its sad its not on, its no loss as I wouldn't go anyway these days. Its not just the credir crunch though as like I said many large car companies were pulling out way before this annoucment.

Boat Shows gone downhill since it left Earls Court to go to Excel too .... :(

I thought it was meant to be every 2 years?

Last summer was my 1st motorshow, and I left dissapointed :( it was tiny and wasnt given any freebies ;)

(Apart from an ice lolly at the Ford stand :) )

There was an alternative Boat Show a couple of years ago at Earl's Court to cater for those who didn't like Excel.

I always liked the Southampton one ..............boat show that is..

Did you go ?

It was terrrible ...

My mate used to organise the shows , works for IPC media now . Boat Show at EC used to be brilliant, a really good atmosphere , the exhibitors used to enjoy it too . Absolutely soulless at Excel , everyone i know hates it.

Ending the Motor Show for a year and the huge downturn in sales might just be a good thing. Carmakers are their own worst enemy. Faced with the global warming issue being taken up by all govts we still see MB and BMW in an arms race on performance. And what for? To do 70 mph legally. What a joke. Cars are no longer designed for purpose but to please the little boy in us. 'I want bigger'. 'I want faster'. Power that is useless in modern traffic conditions and just leads to greater anti-car pressure is counter to all our interests.

Next problem is govts who do all they can to stop the car industry getting to a sensible size. Jaguar, Volvo, Land Rover, Aston Martin, Saab have all lost money for ages and should have been allowed to go under. Propping them up just keeps up the excess capacity and makes it harder for others to make money.

Cars over 3 litres should be phased out and all cars should have limiters so that one day we shall all see that 'excessive' performance is no longer worth having.

Instead Audi, MB, BMW, Jaguar, Bentley etc just go on with more and more power like Lemmings over the cliff. Sad to watch.

Ahhahahahahahahahahahahahah !! :D

Dream on ...

No, I didn't go. But one of my brother's mates was the accountant for the show, and so he went along and spent most of the time in the bar ...

I did used to enjoy the old EC Boat Shows, though. The only good thing about Excel is that it is less crowded (= less atmosphere?) and they can do the indoors windsurfing, which is a laugh!

I stopped going to the motor show years ago. Too many people, can't get near the cars...

Now I go to the Goodwood Festival of Speed every year - yes there are plenty of people but you can get right close up to the cars. Miles better than the motor show.

excessive performance would always be in demand, as long as people like me are alive

Yes it will be demanded. Just as there is a demand for guns in Britain and elsewhere. And for child pornography. But in a democracy we do have the power to ban things we feel are harmful to society as a whole.

IMO it is far less harmful to motorists in general to ban absurd 6 litre cars than to tax smaller cars. Given any chosen target for CO2 emissions from cars, there is a real choice to be made about whether to make some of the savings by limiting speed, and/or limiting ccs. The more we save that way, the less we shall be forced to save from 'ordinary' motorists.

Fat, unfit, fifty-year-old businessmen in excessively powered cars are not a great safety prospect or good for the environment. Nor do I want to pay for the polcie to need supercars to keep up with them. If the max speed is 70 what harm is a limit for all of say 80 or 90?

fat fifty year old business men driving on the track day weekend once a week at 100+mph is well better for the environment than little shopping trolleys running around the city centre endlessly doing 50mpg and 20k miles a year and getting change every 2 years for another, with their loads of unrecyclable plastic parts.
better still ban all cars. According to the green brigade, No car is good for the environment. in fact while we are at it, ban trucks, trains, buses, aircraft, TV's and aftershaves, refridgerators and go back to captain caaaaaavemen

ordinary motorists, you mean more like jealous motorists. this is looking more and more like envy. a little bit like those who says do not pay footballers that much as they do no work, helping people. As it is in demand, it will be bought.

As for the green issue it leaves much to be desired. Any idea how much CO2 is lost by clearing forests to make way for new homes in an ever increasing population. or by manufacturing processes and waste disposal
