Back in the 70s I used to buy Custom Car magazine, which followed drag racing. They published a photograph of a meeting in America where an engine blew its supercharger completely off, not an unusual occurence. It showed the supercharger in mid-air, a fraction of a second before it hit the television cameraman also shown in the picture, killing him instantly.

Yes indeed, motor racing is dangerous.

In 1955 A Mercedes 300 SLR crashed into the crowd killing the driver and 84 spectators which led to Mercedes staying out of Motoracing until 1980!
