motorway speed limits

Never, as I said ... I typically set the cruise control to 120 kph. But travelling overnight on continental motorways it is possible to achieve high average speeds.

I do the same but I find little difference between 120 and 110 or 130 because one has to check back so often that the higher speed has little advantage. For example, one always meets road works and these destroy any attempt to maintain a high average. I don't bother. I am accused of being an over cautious driver though.
But this is going out of context. On a perfectly clear road, lots of things would be possible. In the UK those days have more or less disappeared.

I think they need a bigger range of expressions though - you get the same unhappy face for doing 31 that you get for doing 50, i think 30 - 35 should warrant a neutral with perhaps a raised eyebrow etc ;)

Perhaps a sequence

 :) ;)  :(

25.........31..... 35......... 60

Ade :D

Me and my friend left my house in Peterborough, took 2 hours to get to Dover.

Then from Calais, it took 9 hours to get to Modena, that included 3 fuel stops and a couple of Ice Creams.

France during the day was fine.
Switzerland during the day was slow.
Italy in the evening was very high speeds.

Total distance = 1485km
Average speed = 135kph

Dave!

Mmmm... no doubt arriving cool, calm and refreshed thanks to those ice creams :D

ViaMichelin quotes the Calais - Modena run as 1321km (1272km motorway) and an estimated journey time of 11h 55m  (comfort stops extra). I've relied on their info for years and have rarely bettered their times.

Having said that, I once covered over 225 miles down the A71 from north of Orleans to Clermont-Ferrand in just under two hours. Arriving at our destination some way beyond Aix-en-Provence I felt a bit tense that evening!

What helped was that it was my first drive in europe in my car.

When we stopped for fuel my M5 owning mate took control of the driving.

We were in a car with a reasonable 300 mile range at speed.

We were young and stupid and it was brilliant. 3160 miles in 3.5 days.

Dave!

It could also be argued they are there for our protection and safety???

Really, so when I'm getting tail gated by an uninsured lout in a stolen shed of a ford escort how exactly will that protect me.

How useful were CCTV camera's when gary newlove got his head kicked in for telling some yobs to leave his car alone.

My cousin got mugged, did CCTV either give evidence to catch the criminals or protect him. No it didn't.

Apparently (its a statisitc I heard) that CCTV has cut crime by 3%. Not very good is it.

You can't put your faith in monitoring systems....

You need to think (as I am sure you're already aware of this as you teach it) of the merits of better driving, awareness and anticipation in road use. That will cut journey times if people used the road space availble to them more effectively (eg on my way to work lane 2 of the duallers was empty so lane 1 clogged up near a roundabout, whats wrong with using lane 2 and re-entering the dual carriage way after leaving the 2nd exit in lane 2).

The methodology of thinking would have prevented my cousing being mugged (if he had been more switched on in the first place).
