Mandatory MOTs to be reintroduced from August 1st

Mandatory MOTs for vehicles in England, Scotland and Wales will be reintroduced from 1 August, the government has said.

Drivers have been allowed to delay the test for six months due to the coronavirus pandemic, but there are growing concerns about road safety.

Roads Minister Baroness Vere said MOTs would be key as restrictions were eased and more people returned to the roads.

"Garages across the country are open and I urge drivers who are due for their MOT to book a test," she said.

.................................

Since 30 March, owners of cars, vans and motorcycles have been eligible for a six-month exemption, with that stretching to one year in Northern Ireland.

However, the policy has created anxiety among some drivers, given that one in three vehicles typically fail their test.

A survey by Halfords found that more than four in 10 motorists were concerned about the condition of other vehicles on the road. Meanwhile, only 2% felt there might be an issue with their own vehicle.

.....................................

Vehicle owners with an MOT due date before 1 August will still receive a six-month exemption, the government said.

That's cleared things up then....

Got one booked for tomorrow for my mums car coincidentally. I hadn't realised it had expired two weeks ago.

Better to be safe than sorry.

Don’t see the confusion myself - those who’ve benefited from the (6 month) extension still have it, those due from August onwards need to book a test as before.

You can check online if you’re unsure in all of ten seconds :)

I had the extension but got it done for £30 when it was in for a service, the garages are going to be busy soon with the backlog of extensions as well as the regular tests from August onwards..:)

The test is due on the C350 next week, but it needs a bit of work and I can't get it in before the end of the month and I also want the weather back so I can do the brakes my self, does that mean its not now due until the end of the year? I would like to get it back to December in any case....

Had our cars tested on schedule early June. No sweat. £25 each. Why would you not? Also had them in for scheduled services before MoT. Same old, same old.

My car's MOT expires on 12 July, there was no extension. So I had it done today. Needless to say it passed 😎

But I wanted to draw your attention to this little pointless and useless yet absolutely great app called KnowYourCar. Basically you save your car's reg in the app and it shows you all the usual stuff available in the public domain, MOT/VED bla bla.... BUT it did a nice thing today... I dropped the car off at the MOT place, and got notification on my phone to say my car has passed its MOT around 5 minutes before the garage called to say the car was ready! Now that must be worth something......!

it should still extend 6 months, as the auto extension only ceases non 1 August .. I think

if it expired 2 weeks ago, it would have extended automatically by 6 months

As said they will extend all the MOTs up until the cut off date in August, but it doesn’t show online until it has nearly expired. No need to worry about it though if you’re happy to use the extension, wait and it will happen :thumb:

I
the extension happens about 1 week before expiry

I see. Didn't realise that, I checked online and saw the due date still showing as 12th July, and thought that for some reason that the extention didn't apply. But of course it should have applied because it's for cars whose MOT is due on or before 31st July

Still, I am not bothered, got it out of the way and that"s all that counts :thumb:

I'm glad they are stopping the extension. Cars have been roaming around the streets for weeks at normal levels, not much of a 'lockdown' really and a lot of garages re-opened weeks ago so no excuse. Mine didn't fall into the extension category but even if it did, I would have had mine done by now to ensure the car is road legal.

There are people out there who don't care about their cars and this extension has potentially kept hundreds of unsafe cars on the road. Yes the car must be road legal, but how many cars will get stopped with suspension/brakes/bushes etc issues if they have an extended (and current) MOT? None. I personally know of someone who's vehicle needed a small amount of work to pass it's MOT. The vehicle got a 6 month extension and the work is still outstanding. It will get done before it's next MOT as it will fail otherwise. It's not dangerous, but lights on the dash now fail an MOT. These kind of people are careless and need a good kick up the ****.

MOT testers have been back at work for a while now, this should have been lifted 1st July (if not sooner).

Exactly, I had the MOT done for the E55 on 2nd July.

One of the lads and my nephew have had theirs extended till ~November.
I've had both cars over and checked tyres, brakes, pipes etc. as they are not of the mechanical type and I'm not keen on them driving something not checked.

according to this DVLA page
If your MOT was originally due in the same month as your vehicle tax and is being extended because of coronavirus (COVID-19), you cannot tax your vehicle until the extension has been applied. This is normally 3 days before your MOT is due to expire.

Bit of brinkmanship required then!
