I would guess it was also the fact that it was concealed by the (religious) headress that made the news, it would be impossible for anyone not wearing a wrap round the head to hide the earpieces and wires.

On a more general point, with MP3's and outrageous car sound systems I would guess there are going to be a lot of profoundly deaf 40 + year olds 20 years down the line, the volume these things are played at.

Incidentally why are you afraid of saying 'Muslim'? Has it suddenly become a swear word? The only reason she could get away with it was because of the Hijab - it's directly relevant to the story.

There's nothing wrong with music players in general. There is everything wrong with discretely listening to music while listening to testimony of someone you've sworn an oath to try. Fairly simple case.
