A friend at work just asked me I fyou can recover a file after you save over it. His g/f has done a 3000 word essay then re typed a file and the saved rather than saving as..

Can you recover the file or is she going to have to re type it.

Cheers

Shaun

Also, was she in an office (or school/university) environment with the file stored on a server?

A competent IT department would have regular backups and would be able to recover her essay if it was stored on a server.

Also, if the file was stored on a server and overwritten, the system administrator may be able to recover the file as it was to the point she mistakenly overwrote it.

Failing that might be worth having a hunt around the local disk in Documents and Settings to see if any temp files have been created which could hold the information in her essay.

Best of luck!

If the PC runs Windows XP with System Restore (or an older version of Windows with Go Back), then it may be possible to revert the hard drive to a fixed point in time.

It's v v v v unlikely that it will retrieve the file as it was before she overtyped, but with a little luck the most recent restore point might be fairly close to the latest version she had.

If she has it, System Restore can be found in Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools. Go Back could be anywhere, just check every option in Start > Programs.

If she has either, it's just a matter of following the instructions on screen.

Hope this helps!!

PS Don't suppose she has a print out that can be scanned does she? Might retrieve some of the text.

system restore doesn't affect documents or pictures that you've saved - or at least I didn't think it did

Am I missing something?

I don't think it does, GoBack does though as it reverts the entire drive.

I would agree with this - best bet would be she is on a LA pc where all files are stored on a server as above.

If so, best speak to the IT guys asap to recover it - done this a few times in work and had teh file recovered within a day.

No I didnt think system restore recovered saved documents only system settings unless anyone can clarify otherwise. I thought she was stuffed but there are people on here who know a lot more than me so said to my friend I would ask. She has a printed copy so I guess she better get typing.

then use a scanner with OCR software :)

Absolutely. Should be no problem if the printed copy is good quality.

I have mentioned it to them. Thanks for the help guys :bannana:

Go Back used to do - still got it on an old PC in the spare room. Never tried with System Restore, just thought it might as I'm sure I heard somewhere that it's based on Go Back.

Scan with OCR sounds like the best option though - had to do it myself once. Not great but better than starting from scratch!!
