I’m just about to start the search for a multi-car policy for breakdown cover. Mainly for Mrs and Miss Tango, but I’ll add all (4) family members to it.

To help me on my way are there any tips, advice or recommendations from the knowledgable motoring people of MBClub.

TIA.

You have the choice of doing it per person or per car. I went with the per car option for three vehicles, RAC came out cheapest for me.

I got AA last year for a single car, £39 with a £20 voucher back, no home start or recovery back to home.
Mainly for the other half as she was using the car to go down south in case she got stuck on motorway.
Renewal cost this year, £75, let it lapse.

Took out a new Personal Cover last month to cover National Recovery & Roadside Assistance for £76.14.
Wanted the National Recovery as I am sometimes using trailer to take little car away.

Check your bank account. Ours includes cover for any car registered to the household

Thanks guys.
I’ve done a couple of comparison site quotes for 4 people and the results differ from £75 to £225 for pretty much the same cover. Of course the lower quotes are from companies I’ve never heard of and the higher quotes from big names like RAC (£119) and AXA (£134), but the highest was from Start Rescue 🤷‍♂️.
I ran a quote on the RAC website and got a surprise at ~£250. I didn’t look too much into this quote, when I have more time I’ll need to find out if it is comparing apples for apples versus the RAC comparison quote (I doubt it)

BiL mentioned he has cover through his Nationwide account, but I don’t think I have anything with my bank.

Should I stick with the big names or do other companies give a good service too. I suspect it’s a case of “you get what you pay for”.

The search continues.

I got a breakdown quote off my car insurer and it was significantly cheaper than comparison sites. (Multi car policy, multi car breakdown)

I understand insurance companies have their preferred breakdown company, but if you (everyone) had the choice which company would you chose to assist you at the roadside?

We have rac through bank account, it’s for both cars it has everything include, TBH I wouldn’t have Rac, 9.5 miles from home with a hole in the tyre took 11 hours to recover me, for which I had to pay, because hitting something in the road is classed as accident damage and not a puncture, so if it wasn’t packaged with the bank account I wouldn’t touch them

Depending where you are and the time of day the recovery organisations may well subcontract.

As for getting what you pay for .... well I'd say it's down to what happens on the day you need them, the nature of the problem, and where you are.

Thats good to know Paul, thanks.
Sorry to hear of your misfortune though.

Looking into it a little further I’ve found that Mrs Tango would be best suited to have her car covered. That way I’d also be covered when driving it.
I’m leaning towards Miss Tango having personal cover, so she would also be covered if she was a passenger in one of her friends cars.

Top runners so far:
AXA vehicle cover for Mrs T.
LV=Britannia personal cover for Miss T.

Both policies cover:
At home
Roadside assistance
National recovery
Onward travel

Just renewed GreenFlag recoveryplus £113.12, home start, onward journey, basically everything for two of us, all cars plus
And remember: you've got Personal Cover, so you can call us even if you're just a passenger in someone else's car as long as it's in the UK, less than 16 years old, and registered privately

Used to be with the AA for an age but then they stopped negotiating a lower than headline price deal.

Now I just have nationwide call out, and recovery for less £100 from Aviva as part of my annual multi car cover. Haven’t needed to use them so don’t know how good they are, or who they sub contract to.

Something I did find is that comparison sites are producing much better quotes (for the same cover) than quotes direct from the covering companies websites.

Thanks Mikey, I found similar results when I searched. That’s why I think I’ll be choosing LV=Britannia for my Daughter.
Price comparison sites didn’t give a LV quote for the wife, but I’ll check their website out later. 👍🏼

I've switched between RAC and the AA a few times over the years....depending who was doing a deal.....but been with the RAC since 2016 as their loyalty scheme makes it worth while....not only is a cheaper but you get extra features. That said in all the years we have had breakdown cover I've only used it once (air leak in a fuel line on my Jeep meaning it would not start).....and my wife has never used it.....as she usually just calls me!! Cant see the point of specified car cover.....person cover is a far better choice IMO....so we are both covered no matter what we are driving or being driven in...even the company cars.

My wife wont drive any other car but hers and if she’s not in her car, she’s a passenger in mine. I’m covered with mobilo, so not much point in her having personal cover.
Plus having her car covered (instead of personal cover) allows me (and anyone else) to be covered in her car. Seems the best option for our circumstances IMO.

But ALL cars you might every drive are covered on personal cover... and the price is the same. You might not be in your covered car.... but you will always be there with yourself! Can't see any logical argument for car cover... unless it was lots cheaper of course!!!!! Your choice of course..
