My friend Dave needs some car tax advice

I think you meant to say "Într-o zi Rodney, vom fi amândoi milionari!"

Person A has sold his lovely 211 to a friend B, and on the basis that this friend would take delivery of (and re-tax) said car on the first day of Nov, person A sorned the thing on the 28th day of Oct so that he would be able to reclaim the full two months tax remaining, and the car was then parked off-road to comply with sorn rules. Person B then tried to tax car on Nov 1st so that friend A could deliver car to him as he is unable to drive for reqd distance. Friend B was then confronted by earlier posted 'Successful Transaction' notice which effectively prevented him from taxing his new car. Early on Nov 3rd friend B tried again to tax car (using new keeper number on V5) and this time was successful.

Maybe there's a delay in the DVLA computer recognising transactions and Dave should if possible wait a day of two and try again.

Dave shall heed that advice as with all his speeding convictions on here he'd probably end up doing time if he was found without tax. At least Dave hasn't been caught doing 138 though...

Dave could book the new ( to him ) car in for an MOT near his home , then , as long as valid insurance is in place , he can legally drive 'to the pre-arranged test' regardless of the tax status .

Since the seller will probably notify DVLA of the change of keeper by post , the car will still 'appear' to be taxed to any ANPR cameras it might happen to pass on the way to the MOT test , but if Dave does happen to get stopped for any reason , then he can show that he is legitimately taking the car to be tested .

I think you will find this is not allowed. You are supposed to take the car only to the nearest MOT station. I looked into doing this a few years ago, and was advised you would still get done.

I am deeply impressed by your linguistic skills, my Google translation came up with a different interpretation :)

I corrected your confusion of will for we'll before using Google.

A language my Latin skills enable me to understand about one word in two thousand, except when spoken.

My mate dave would most certainly do it the following day at the post office and send the V5 off with the following days date on it...

Dave knows to deal with the DVLA involves thinking outside of the box..

Legislation?

Tip - it does not exist.

No : there is NOTHING in law which states anything of the kind .

The MOT station can be at the other end of the country . The other popular misconception is that stops along the way ARE permitted , again , nothing to the contrary in law .

Anyone who says otherwise is just offering opinion , not fact .

Why would you need a Post Office? you can apply for VED on line.

Because , as far as the computer is concerned , the vehicle is already taxed , and it will not allow it to be taxed 'again' online - hence the need to go to the Post Office .

After several "Successful Transactions" Friend B (frustrated and inquisitive) decided to try at taxing the car in the small hours and for some reason it worked.
Perhaps the DVLA employee who sits at their main computer to block any transactions which make any sort of sense was out on a ciggie break?

New keeper supplement should get over this. Charles has found a flaw in their system.

There is actually case history on the stopping front. Someone was done for stopping at shop on way or way back. Court held that such a stop was in keeping with driving to/from an mot. I'll try and find the details.

Advice for Damsel In Distress

In a similar vein, anybody able to be a Knight In Shining Armour to a Damsel In Distress (aka SuzyCute)

Her W169 is bought and paid for (Evans Halshaw) but she cannot take it away as the V5 is not yet back from DVLA (it had a private plate) so of course they cannot tax it. They are trying to be helpful but say that the way around it does not exist anymore since the changes.

Can Dodgy Dave offer any guidance? :dk:

Couldn't they deliver it on trade plates ?

Otherwise , a wait may be inevitable ?

Yes, but in some ways that would make it worse as she would not be able to drive it :wallbash:

Currently going through a couple of plate changes. Plate off my car I bought in September back to owner, plate off my E430 on to September car.

I called the DVLA (they called this type of plate exchange a double-shuffle) and followed their instructions to the best of my ability but had the documents returned because I had missed out a V5 and I hadn't enclosed payment. I cannot make the payment electronically or over the phone, and have been asked to send a cheque or postal order.

My new car was driven 80 miles yesterday from the previous owners place to mine. Today I am filling in the SORN declaration as it will now be off the road for a while. Although the sale transaction is dated, there is no time on it. So AFAIK no way to say whether the journey was done before or after the transaction took place.
I do like being able to easily SORN cars now and taking less of a hit on the tax when it is refunded. I have other cars which will be kept on SORN, if I decide to use one I will tax it online and if not likely to use for a while will SORN again at the end of the month. Ideal over winter, it should save me £100s every year.

The Post Office will use the same system though?

No confusion at all Charles but auto correct on a 'phone screen that I had not noticed but thank you for your assumption and for pointing it out.
