My new car

Considering this is meant to be a weekend toy and the weather has been crap, it’s been getting a lot of use... The 4wd works well in the snow!!!!

I’ve covered a tad over 3000 miles already and averaged 11.9mpg over those (not too bad I don’t think). Other than having a parking brake warning light coming up and then disappearing 30seconds later it’s had no issues either (touch wood).

I’m really enjoying it, one of the reasons for wanting to move away from the AMG was that it made me drive like a d***, full power everywhere as if I had some point to prove, well that and because I loved the noise!!!! I don’t get that in the Bentley, I can quite happily sit at 60odd in the slow lane with no drama, it doesn’t need to be driven fast to enjoy it, it’s not a sleeper like the S55, quite the opposite!!! The amount of positive comments I’ve received on it is phenomenal, I’ve never had such a variety of people willing to voice their appreciation of a car like they do on the Bentley, maybe it’s because it’s british!?

The power delivery is so smooth, it’s fast but doesn’t feel like it is accelerating as fast as it actually is and you only realise when you look at the speedo. One other thing I have noticed is that when “pressing on” the rear wheels can slide out a bit, I wonder if the 4wd system has a rear bias (I can’t find any info online).

So I have my first out of warranty Bentley problem - the headliner has started to sag!

40mins to get it out, just dropped it off at a local auto trimmer who will glue it back and i haven’t had to remortgage!

They're lovely cars and incredibly well-designed. The nice thing about them is that they're actually engineered to cope with silly speeds which is a large part of why they're so heavy. If you ever take it on the Autobahn you'll be pleasantly surprised how effortless and safe everything feels at high speeds.

If you're planning on keeping it for a while you might want to consider getting a VCDS as it allows you to interrogate the systems (which are all pure VW :D) and keep an eye on things.

I believe it should top 200mph!!!!

Yea I got VCDS as I wanted to try and do the suspension lowering mod through that but it doesn’t work so looks like I will get links to drop it around 15mm.

Polished and waxed:

A very fine coupé!

I love the idea of one but I'm too scared of the potential bills.

To be honest the amount of high milers out there show how well built they are, I can’t see it costing me much more to run than my CL55 or S55 did. *touch wood*!!!!

Mmm! Words are not enough.

But I would say georgous. Maybe it’s my eyesight but looking at the first photo I thought it was a deep claret colour. Perhaps there was something red nearby which was reflecting on the black,

I’m surprised about your head liner on such a prestigious car. I’ve retrimmed headlining on my Rover SD1 Vitesse and more recently on my Rover 75 Connoisseur SE.

Holy Moly, what have you said???

Banned for tempting fate! :D
The VW D1 platform cars really were superbly engineered and probably have fewer congenital problems than the W220 and C215. The only issues that Bentleys really suffer are brittle plastic vacuum lines for the engine and possible lambda sensor failures (which are both probably engine-out jobs). The suspension is generally pretty bullet-proof although anti-roll bar droplinks usually need replacing around 80-100k miles. Most of the electrical problems the cars suffer are due to low battery voltages.

The only real problem is that they do feel somewhat ponderous compared to something like a CL55. Having said that, once the car's taken a lean into corners, it's very composed and the AWD pulls you out of them very nicely. It's also worth noting that they're fitted with Continuous Damper Control which Mercedes has only just started fitting to the W222 :D

So almost a year later and over 8000 miles covered I had my first MOT - I have to admit, I was shitting myself a bit and the MOT tester was right winding me up! Anyway it flew through with only an advisory for kids seats in the rear so he was unable to check belts!

Next it’s time for a service, 13L of mobil1 0W40 and the oil filter arrived in the post today, I’m waiting for the 36mm oil filter housing socket to come and I’ll get it done next weekend.

Now in terms of air filters I have stumbled across these:

BENTLEY CONTINENTAL GT FLYING SPUR GTC AIR FILTER W12 | eBay

At 1/3 of the price of genuine ones they are very tempting, the genuine ones are obviously at a disgustingly inflated price anyway. The W12, phaeton ones are slightly different but are around £40!

It's great to hear it's been a reliable car for you.

It's a stunning car and I do love them.

I was pooing myself on your behalf but I guess it's the same old story - not many post up to say how they've had no issues so perception is skewed!

Saying that, I'm not sure I am any more confident about owning one yet (I never say never these days as I change my mind so often)!

To be honest the amount I saw with 160k+ miles gave me some confidence!

I love it, it’s so practical, feels special and generally gets the right kind of attention. I did get one guy I unfortunately have to see on occasion who always has to make himself feel big. He closed the door and took great pleasure in stating “it sounds like a Volkswagen”.... alright mate :wallbash:

There is no denying the looks - they are stunning.

I know that kind of person - they also say things like "It's a bit old isn't it".

If these are the worse cusses they can think of - you know you've bought the right car. :D
