They are time, there will be a fault code stored if the air pressure doesn't reach the required amount within a programmed time frame.

The Piston ring could be worn so it cant get enough Air required within the time limit, or you could have a to larger leak at the rear strut.

I do have a Piston repair kit for that compressor if you would like it? i dont want anything for it and can post it Monday for you if you so wish.

Makes sense Gav. Thanks that would be great if you can. I had the car up on the PCS ramps for their quick BOTG check and Olly did say the air flow was lower than it should be and suggested compressor issue.

Looks like it was a new compressor in July 2017 as documented so could it still have a piston/seal issue you reckon? Would make sense I guess and not to tricky to whip out compressor and replace the piston seal.

I'll PM you my details. Best get the Maser back in her bed for the night! She can sleep under the E55K tonight [emoji6]

If there is a leak elsewhere the Compressor would be working over time, as they come in and out when the car is driving too.

No problem buddy, Pm the address you would like it sent to and i will get it sorted Monday :)

It might be worth checking the warranty status of that part before you touch anything - original MB parts come with 2 years AFAIK. Obviously if you start opening it up I don’t think they’d want to know..

This is where you need someone with the correct kit - namely STAR - to test and diagnose the issue properly. The compressor could be fine - why else would it run and stop after 25 seconds every time? I suspect it’s shutting down for low pressure due to the known leak at the rear as it’s not building up any pressure in the system.

But again all guesswork without the right test kit. Would be a shame to open that compressor up if it’s only a year old and there’s nothing wrong with it!

Thanks boys. Just met Mac (aka t567wab) as he popped in tonight on his way back from Luton so coming past me. We had a look at the rear strut air connections and brushed some soapy water around the reservoir to hose joints. They do look as though there has been some possible leak there as the area around the joint looks a little furred. Trouble is there is no to zero pressure in the rear now as the compressor won't allow any pressure in the system. Might need a diagnostic reset or STAR or similar to clear the code to maybe allow the compressor to run for longer. I am guessing it can be jumped or wired from a permanent 12v battery but not sure if that will cause any issues or complications or create sync issues with ECU.

Just really need to get some air in the system so it is drivable back to Mac's. Or if not may need to get AA to recover to his garage. I am quite happy to try the piston replacement and repair kit but not sure it is the issue at the moment. Might be best to recover and get a specialist to look at it. I am sure they would diagnose and resolve it quick enough as seems a simple enough issue with the right kit or on STAR.

Just going to try running the compressor direct from a 12v car battery to run it for longer than 20 secs to see if it gets pressure back into the system again then kicks it all back into gear.

Just pasted a link to a video I've just take of compressor powered on by 12v battery bypassing cars power that turns off compressor after 22-23 secs.

It turns on fine and runs but does anyone know if this sounds normal? Sounds weak to me compared to other small compressors I'm used to hearing.

I can hear the air flowing but not sure if that noise is leaking at and the end on power off when compressor shuts down it seems to disappate the air very abruptly.
Maybe could be piston seal gone in compressor or leak at compressor or compressor knackered. Not sure at this stage.

Dea where are are you based?

I run a bodyshop and we have done a few w211s Inc my E55, intrested to see what prices you have been getting, we have also fitted a E63 front end to a front damaged E55.
