I've always admired the Mercedes models, mainly the older stuff but ive never actually owned one. I've been looking at practical classics for a while now and always fancied either a 1987 BMW M535i or a 1989 Merc W124 coupe. I was pretty much convinced i wanted an M535i after driving one a mate of mine owns. I think the deciding factor was a description of the W124 on the internet website, "Wilkepedia" of which it describes the model as "over engineered" and built with "no expense spared" - Sold !!!

I went to view this car on Monday night after seeing it in the classifed ad's section of the forum. After a little test drive i decided to buy the car as it was mechanically spot on and drove superb for a 17 year old car. Dont get me wrong it did need a few minor jobs doing ( and ive not finished yet ) things like the front and rear arches are rusty, front bumper damaged, rear light cracked, part of the leather was faded / worn, remote central locking didnt work, O/S/F elec wind reg leaves a 5mm gap at close etc etc - these were all pointed out to me by Kurt who was selling the car. A price was agreed ( £750 ) and we completed the deal over a glass of Ribena ( Kurt had forgot to buy some milk that evening so a brew was out of the question
)

I picked the car up the following night and drove home ( 25 mile journey ) without any problems at all. The following day i went over the car and took note of all the jobs that needed doing. The first thing i wanted to do was give the car a wax. Theres nothing better than getting to know what the body work of the car is like in my opinion than giving the car a good polish. You can pick up on all the faults in the paintwork and damage that requires correcting. The following day i managed to repair the remote central locking key fob by making 0ne good fob out of 2 bad ones. This now works perfect.
It was Saturday morning when i set about minting the car properly. I had a full day to myself as the Mrs was visiting relatives with the little one ( wahoo !!! ). The first job i did was T-cut the paintwork with my electric orbital buffer. This took around 2 hours and was bloody hard work. There's nothing worse than the smell of T-cut if you ask me !! I then went over the car with Autoglym resin polish which took around 1 hour. This was then buffed off with the orbital polisher. The results were fantastic. I did pick up on certain area's of the car which have been painted but for the time being the paintwork now looks pretty good.
The arches were very rusty and in order to get the car back to showroom condition they will need cutting out ( rear ) and new ones welding in. The front wings will also need replacing ( going to use genuine mercedes ). This work will be carried out shortly as its booked into my mates bodyshop at the end of the month. For the time being i carefully sanded the rust down and painted over it with "Comma" rust primer. Once this had dried i manually applied some "199" blauschwarz paint which i had mixed by BCN body supplies in Blackburn. Again the results were pretty good ( i am a time served body repairer / painter ) so i have a good idea of how to apply the paint manually in order to get a good finish.
After the exterior was finished ( 6 coats of Autoglym to build the shine ) i concentrated on the interior. I cleaned the leather off with some white spirit and applied some "265" mushroom leather dye which i purchased off E bay .....

I only did the drivers and passengers side seats as the rears were in very good order. It was the passengers side seat that was worse but after applying 3 coats of the dye it came up very well indeed. I then proceedes to remove all the carpets and power wash them off with truck wash. I left them to dry in the sun for about 6 hours before i refitted them. The door apertures again were covered with truck wash and power washed. I removed all the boot trim and spare wheel. The trim was powerwashed off along with the spare. I thoroughly cleaned the spare wheel well and then rubbed the internal section of the spare wheel with a "3M" Scotch Brite and the painted it. After the interior had dried i built it back up.
Theres still lots to do. The car needs paintwork and a few minor mechanical jobs still need doing but here are the results of my work so far. Enjoy !!
