Update 11th June 2016

Return from France.

Well after a week break and after best part of 900 miles though I'd share some pics.

I didn't take any pics etc on the outward journey.

The only German in sight.

So after 400ish miles return trip managed to get 42.mpg from start, took half a tank of fuel, kept it at around 80mph.Not too bad with a full load.

It was a pleasant drive the W211 ate up the miles and was comfortable to drive. Next trip over prob in a few months.

Thanks

Update 21st August 2016

Headlight restoration

The headlights on the 211 have seen better days. Its been a job I've been meaning to do for some time but never gotten around to actually doing it.

They were hazed and had a yellow tint to them and were rought to the touch.

So after some motivation from a friend who recently did his i decided to finally get them done.

PlastX wasn't enough to get them as new. It made some difference but not realy significant. Even after several attempts.

NOTE

The same product was used by my friend on his bmw. It made a Huge difference. He spend 30 min on each side and his lights came out 8,9 out of 10.

Seeing as we had started the job we decided to wet sand them. Starting with 800 grit and wotking through to 1500.

After best part of an hour and a half we decided it wasnt going to get any better. At least not for today.

The end results I'd give a score of 6 out of 10 in terms of the final result. There no longer rough upon touching and are way better than before BUT there still remains a slight haze.

If you'd like to make them look brand new you could try what I did and that was to attack them with wet and dry sand paper I use a fairy liquid and water mix to keep the paper lubed and I start with 600 grit followed by 1000 grit then 1500 grit and finally 2000 before using a machine polisher and cutting compound to bring them up like new but you could use that little tool you used with a cutting compound.

To get the best result you need to start more course (600 grit) to eat through the crusty layer and finish even finer (2000 grit) to leave fine haze the compound can easily shine it up and they then literally look brand new

Here's a few pics of mine

The best way to refresh these (after sanding up to 1500 grit) is a 2K clear lacquer coat.
They then look "as new" and it will last.

Update 28th May 2016

Smell of fumes in cabin.

Took the car to MSL and had it checked out. It was diagnosed as a knackered injector.

So injector 3 was replaced with a new one today but the lads at MSL.

happy to report the smell of fumes has disappeared.

The cars booked in Wednesday to hopefully resolve the 2 remaining malfunctions srs and esp.

Thanks

When I had my C270 I had no 5 injector seal failure about 3 weeks into ownership , the gases had worn a track up the side of the injector , which had to be replaced . A bit later no 4 went and I was advised to change no 2 and 3 at the same time ; then no 1 went a week before I was due to change the car .

My thermostat was also suspect as temp always sat around 60deg and heater never blew more than lukewarm , but car never returned less than 47mpg
usually around 50 and 55 was easily achievable on a run . I always ran at the tyre pressures listed on the filler flap . I never got round to doing the stat , nor the block heater which I suspected didn't work . Had the turbo pipe too . Latterly , there was a fuel smell the source of which I never found , all those little pipes are expensive .

I also had a bouncing door lock , electronic key failure , rear wiper failure on my estate , one lower control arm , and a snapped wheel bolt I couldn't get out without damaging the wheel , ended up just getting another set of wheels off Gumtree .

Glad to see you are getting your car sorted out , mine was a money pit I eventually drew a line under , the new owner I heard suffered turbo failure a few months later .

Trying to get the courage up to do this! Could you clarify if that is sandpaper or emery paper please?

Anybody else done this with success? Bad enough doing it on my W211, but I can hear the screams of anguish even now when I approach SuzyCute's R107!

Cheers

It is simple to do but as I said start off course (600grit) and finish off fine (2000grit or higher) and a few grades in between (1000 and 1500 is what I use) the higher you finish the less work the compound has to do and if you do not own a machine polisher you can buy a mini head which can be used on a drill.

This is the sort of paper you want, I use the 3M equivalent but this will work just fine:

Halfords Wet & Dry Sanding Paper 15...

This is the compound I use for both my lights and paintwork, I've used this stuff for probably 10 years and swear by it:
