This and that.
I've just found (not hard to spot, actually) a folder in my root.

It's called "de32c35ad370735acaa0ccccc67e7f", and it contains just one file, called "msxml4-KB927978-enu" which is a 286k log file of some description.

The first few lines of the file read as follows:

The folder was created on 17/11/06 at 20:45, and I'm not sure I was using my machine then (although I may have been)

What the heck is it

TIA

Could be one of Microsofts myriad updates that installed itself and did not "clean up" properly.

Was your system switched on/connected to the web at 20:34 on the 17th and set to auto download updates from Microsoft?

Dunno. It downloads updates automatically, but it's my business laptop, and I had a week off last week, so it's unlikely that I was using it at 8pm on Friday evening (although, sad as I am, it is possible). If the laptop's on, at home, then it's on the net.

Further down the log file it says "Product: MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB927978) -- Installation completed successfully.", so you're prolly right.

I can just delete it then?

The is the MS XML Update pushed on 14th Nov. (MS06-071)

The folder and log are left over from the installation, if you delete it you won't be able to automatically uninstall the XML package, but as MS haven't designed it with uninstalling in mind this is no great loss!

Good, because I just deleted it as well!

Glad I got it right for once! LOL
