Hoping someone can shed some light on a wire i found today. I've had the dreaded flooded foot well on passenger side and as part of the plan to sort it out i've taken the carpet out. One thing i found though is a thin wire tucked under the trim along the door frame, towards the back of the car. As it was hanging out a few inches i gave it a 'very light pull' and realised that it did not seem to be attached to anything. So i pull it out and am now left with a wire, looking a bit like a shoelace. It's about 4-5 feet in length and is coming out of the under side of the panel at back of foot well. See pics.

Anyone know what it is or does?

Forgot to say it's a 2001 CLK 230k

Don't quote me on this, but I think it is the speed sensor wire.
Bot used if you don't have comand.

Hmmm. As good a guess as any. I've not got Comand fitted, or anything of that nature so it could be an unused wire. Wonder if that means i can just tuck it away behind the carpets when i put them back down.

Looks like a airbag sensor wire , but again I may be wrong !!!

Well the plot thickens. I'm not even sure where to put this back if it is serving a purpose.

It doesnt look like factory wiring. It could well be the aerial lead for a tracker.

Id go with a tracker aerial !

Follow it back, if there is an old tracker, check its batteries are not getting hot (especially if you have any battery drain problems)

Blimey this has created a rang of opinions. I'm thinking i'll need to remove the metal panel and the carpet / insulation padding behind (opportunity to dry it out properly). As for the carpet i've got that outside drying out naturally. The comments that the carpets can take months to dry out spurred me to remove it completely. Just hoping it goes back in ok now.

As for the wire it appears to have two wires running inside the material outer casing. A tracker is a good shout. Now to trace where it goes. Thing is i have a tracker on my Land Rover and there is no aerial, just a black box emitting a signal.

Thanks again. I'll keep you posted. Hoping to get it off tomorrow.

So here's the next installment. For those in the know, is this a tracker? As can be seen there are two main parts and the one on the right has a large battery in.

Ok so the unit on the left appears to be an automatic gearbox control module. This is the one with the 4-5 foot wire coming out of it. In which case i assume i need this one and indeed the wire attached. Just a query to anyone in the know. If i need to place this wire back where it belonged. Where actually should it be sited?

According to a quick search, the box on the right is a Motorola Tracker unit. I have no idea how to disconnect this though. Any tips, or shouldi just remove the defective battery and leave it where it is.

Well i've had another look and indeed the wire is coming from the tracker, so it may well be an aerial.

As an aside on this issue. This is likely to be a factory fittted Motorola tracker, so if it is working (no idea) who where can i get it activated and working etc?

Many thanks for posts on this thread.

It will not be factory fitted, either dealer fitted or by an tracker specialist afterwards. You'll have to work out which kind of tracker it is, contact them, pay a fee etc. - but have it checked to make sure the batteries haven't run out (or died)
