    Hi everybody!
W221, S320 cdi, 2009. Had a bit of trouble setting the clock properly in Comand screen. Eventually sorted that OK, but went to look at other things at the bottom of the date/time section. Saw AUX and put a 'dot' in it, now I can't get any screens up except the air con at the bottom. I've disconnected the battery overnight and then took the fuse out in the rear armrest for a couple of hours all to no avail. HELLLP !

Might I ask what battery you disconnected,if it was the battery in the engine bay that was the wrong one,you have the main battery that runs all the things in the car behind the rear seats, the battery in the engine bay is just for starting, you need to open the boot and I have found it is easier if you remove the carpet/board on the boot floor then one side panel, you have to disconnect the interior light, then you can pull off the rear seat backing and you will see the battery plus loads of other stuff.

Thanks for the information. I know that my auxiliary battery is not in the boot, as when I bought it the battery needed to be changed and the Mercedes specialists couldn't find it ! Even Mercedes themselves weren't sure but eventually came up with 'behind the right hand dash area. So, I'll try and dig it out soon. Glyn

Did you press the 'on' button near the rotary controller? Sounds like you've possibly turned it off and it is just showing the Aircon as a result ?

Most S class have a great big battery between the rear seat and the boot, accessible by removing the rear panel in the boot .. you probably need to remove fuse for the COMAND and the amplifier if not disconnecting the massive battery. Please only undo the ground lead ..

Well Richard is right it is easy to switch command off by mistake,I did it and took a hour to understand what I had done,I also agree that a W221 of that era have a large battery behind the rear seat,it is twice as big as the starting battery in the engine bay,if your car does not have this then I live and learn.

zip dip, I do have a feeling I have seen a W221 recently that surprised me as it had no battery in the back and a big one in the front - but I could be confusing it with something else :)

Sorry I've been slow in coming back to you all ! In some sort of order: I didn't turn off the screen by mistake. It lights up ,shows the Mercedes logo, ( which I believe is the checking of components phase ) Then only shows the air con strip at the bottom. I can assure you all that there isn't any battery in the back of any shape or size. When I first bought it from a heavy commercial vehicle agency who specialise in Mercs, they couldn't find the auxilliary battery, so I said I would take it to my Friend at Mercserve in Nottingham. They couldn't find it anywhere either so got in touch with the main agents who after several wrong guesses hit on right hand side behind dash area. This battery is about the size of the average Burglar alarm standby battery!! I am a retired motor workshop foreman , so I have a fair idea how things should be ( I hope ) The car has only done 30000 mls now so I'm hoping it's just a fuse. I'm going to start today by taking all the fuses out in the rear armrest and leaving it overnight ( having checked the fuses.) Another thing that's hampering me is that the list of fuse numbers that comes with the car bear no resemblance to what is there. GROAN. PS: the battery under the bonnet is massive.....

Thanks for the update. But we want you to find the main battery not the auxiliary ("support") battery and disconnect that.

The symptoms you describe are exactly those of the unit being switched off. (i.e comes on, does its tests then leave you to control the Aircon but music functions are off) - so something weird going on (which perhaps is not a useful comment by me ...)

I have looked at EPC (parts catalogue) and battery behind between rear seat backs and boot is only there when you have certain options (that are very common in the UK). If you don't have them you don't need the extra batteries needed for them. It can be not there, 60, 70 or 95 A/H
The possibly one under the bonnet can be 60/92/95 A/H - again option dependant.

And you have found the support battery for cars with Stop Start (tiny thing).

So you are looking for a big battery ...

My car is probably the lowest spec there can be. IE no parking aids, seat warming, seat memory, phone, DAB. Definitely doesn't have stop/start Perhaps that is why it doesn't have an extra battery back or front. When I bought it I went through everything with a fine toothcomb, which included boot trim removal just so I knew what was what for the future. The only batteries on it are the main battery under the bonnet and the auxilliary battery behind the dash. I've just pulled all the rear seat fuses and disconnected the main battery ( too wet to get it outside to get at the auxilliary one. I'll leave them out overnight then I'll take out the under bonnet fuses beneath the ecu tomorrow. I really am grateful for all your suggestions, so please, if you have more let me know. Glyn

Ah. That explains the lack of rear battery! I thought it even came with heated seats. Let me know how it goes.

Stop/Start is not spec-related, it is standard on all variants as of certain year (~2011 in the case of the W204).

Well, I removed all fuses except the large heavy amperage ones. From rear armrest, both ends of dash and the under the ECU fuseboxes. Left them out for 6 hours, tested them all on a multimeter and put them back. Still no satnav or radio/cd/dvd. Got me to wondering, as I put the 'dot' in the Aux option ( see my first post ) If it's looking for something connected to the AUX plug in the glovebox. I don't have anything with the white, yellow and red leads, but I tried my tablet on the headphone socket to the black and red....still nothing. Getting a bit desperate now!!!

In the menu that includes the time and date, the 3rd one down the list contains a tick box , which is actually a dot, for AUX. In the glove box is a white/red/yellow socket for AUX external connections. I thought that I would enable it and see what it came up with but when I went back the screen went blank.I can't get the screen back with the clock adjustments. I can still get the lumber adjustments and aircon, but that's all. There is only a passing mention of AUX in the handbook and nothing to say how to enable/disable it

Well, all my efforts came to nought, so I took my car to Nathan at Mercserve, Nottingham. He did it while I waited. It took a bit of trying and re-trying but he sorted it in 15 mins. All done on the catagories in the speedo head and the buttons on the steering wheel. I couldn't follow the sequence but then it would have been cheeky of me to rob him of his expertise. So, if it happens to you we now know which ball park we're in. Thanks Nathan, you're a star !!!
