There are 3 parts of firmware in a W211 (with COMAND and no other audio options).
a) Head unit - update with software update disk. The download version is same as the genuine CD version, except genuine CDs are easier to read than CD/RW CD/R disks so less likely to cause an issue if laser is dirty etc. Latest version is the version with ETA as of model year 2007 factory build.
b) Nav drive - firmware comes from the nav disk. We have seen a number of expensive navigation units written off by copied map disks. No sympathy here i'm afraid - just a warning.
c) AGW. The last update was 2006, this has to be done with Star Diagnosis. 2006 update fixed an issue with TMC traffic showing on wrong side of road in UK/AUS etc
