Hi Peeps,

I am on the cusp of buying a 2013 BLUETEC AMG SPORT.

I have never owned a Merc before and am thinking about MPG etc. It is at a garage and they say that they will service, MOT and change the gearbox oil. What should I look for when I go for a test drive.

Steve

I have had both a 320 cdi ML and a 350 cdi? Make sure it has a full service record , gearbox fluid in the 7 g box should have been changed at 75 K miles or 5 years, which ever came first . It should be a very smooth drive with imperceptible gear changes. Make sure it is cold when you take it for a drive , tell the garage you do not want them to have warmed it up before you arrive !
When gearbox is still cold for first mile ore two they can sometimes have a rather harsh change up to second or down 2nd to 1 st, a gearbox service should help .
Make sure that there are no dashboard warning lights showing, in particular mine both had ABS wheel sensor problems after being left parked up , this problem or low battery voltage will cause a series of dashboard warnings to be illuminated.
Engine should be quiet, no rattles even when cold and no noticeable transmission noises .
My daughter currently has a 2015 model and seems to get mid to high 20's round town / mixed driving and over 35,on long motorway runs.
Otherwise normal car buying rules apply , check it has good tyres, preferably all 4 same and with good tread , they are expensive as they will be 19 or more likely 20 inch rims so make sure wheels look good and no noticeable damage. try everything electrical out and everything works properly and check sat nav has been updated.Otherwise they are great cars and I enjoyed mine :)

Thanks Smart320 for your reply.

It has a full Mercedes service history. Full service including auto box oil service and MOT if purchsed..

69k miles, no heated seats as it is a sports.

Looks nice. I must say I do not miss cleaning my Black ML , my SLK is rather easier to keep clean.
Hopefully you will have a good test drive and get to enjoy a great car.

Not having heated seats in a Merc wouldn't suit me, especially in such a large and cost car. Good luck though ;)

Hopefully this ML will be a stepping stone to a GLE in a couple of years 👍

I intend to have written 'cosy', btw. The thing with Mercs, is that if you find a good one, they get under your skin and so long as you invest in maintenance, it'll endure. That's my argument for getting at least the minimum spec that you're happy with, from the off.

Just come across this 2015 ML350 on my doorstep. OK it's grey not black and I suppose I will get used to the interior colour. But the spec is great, pan roof, heated and cooling seats etc. Could always get some AMG pedal covers, how hard is it to change the steering wheel?

I think that's a luxury spec and the interior will scrub up nicely. I have always preferred a light interior. Steering wheels can be swapped over, some people use Royal Steering Wheels, it depends what you have in mind. I like the lighter colour too, the car doesn't suffer for it and also, won't show up dirt and 'cobwebs' so much.

Take a look at Mercland site, Merecedes specialists, they sell plenty of used ML's . I bought my second one from them, had no problems at all with it. They are forum sponsors and have a good reputation amongst forum members , I think a member in Scotland recently bought a car from them having seen it only on the Internet and was delighted with it. Jay Manek is the owner and I would buy another car from him without a second thought.

That’s a very very nice car. Great exterior colour - will hide the dirt and water marks - and the interior is beautiful. They’re aren’t many with light interiors - with the panoramic roof it will feel really light and airy. Go and outbid the other viewer 👍🏻

Many thanks for all your replies, much appreciated. The search for a 2014 > ML350 continues. Wish me luck
Have a drive to Stowmarket and speak to Alex Crow MB Indy if you have any car questions , he will be your future go to guy for MB’s

+1^ for Alex, a lovely helpful guy, I've known him for many years. He has done work on both my cars on and off over that time.
