I am thinking of buying an E Class 320 Cdi. It is a very good spec, including the orthopaedic massaging seats which I want for my wife who has a back problem. The car has done 80,000 miles and as I am not a wealthy man I am a little worried about possible problems and repair costs. It has full MB service history. Can anyone advise me on the potential risk with this mileage or is the car "almost run in" as the salesman said. Thank you.

Doh !!! It's a 2003 model.

Welcome! What year is it? That would help people advise

You could ask your local Merc dealer what a Service Plus package would cost per month. If you are buying from a Merc dealer they might do you a deal.

For a fixed monthly charge virtually everything is covered, except tyres, and includes servicing

2003 model so that would be a W211 right ?

I understand that on pre facelift W211's (that is prior to June 2006 'ish) there were some electrical reliability issues. I'm hoping someone has a list so I can get my newly purchsed W211 checked over too

But I understand that the V6 engine you have is an especially fine example that will stand the text of time.

May I suggest you list the spec and what price is being asked. Hugely helpful and knowledgeable people on here who are not afraid to say what they think!

What is a W211?
I'm not very good am I?
I did see a motorised TANDEM scooter the other day - maybe I should go for that. I can picture us now - running down pedestrians and creating chaos on the roads. Oh well.

Specification

I think the car is Jan. 2003.
Spec -
  • E320 Cdi Avantgarde Auto tip saloon
  • Electric steering column and seats with memory
  • Heated orthopaedic seats
  • Panoramic sun roof
  • Comand satnav/tv
  • Leather
  • In dash CD multichanger
  • Cruise, climate (with independent rear controls) etc.
  • Xenons
Other usual stuff.
Thanks.

There were electrical gremlins with the first of the new shape cars, W211 design.
Check ALL updates have been performed to the electrical system and SBC braking system, there have been loads to do.
The service department should answer this query, not Sales.

A particularly costly problem is the radiator can leak coolant into the gearbox cooling system. The service department will also confirm whether your potential car has been checked as it falls in the time frame for the faulty radiators.
If this car has this particular problem it will show up as juddering when driving between 1000-1800 revs.

Good luck with the purchase.

If the car has a circular white label on the gearbox oil cooler, then it has had the new rad, if not do allow for a replacement rad as a prevention issue and safety precaution

The radiator problem Dieselman refers to affects cars built up to September 03. If your car is a 53 reg, the build date becomes important rather than the first registration date.

Given the full MBSH, all the other updates should have been done (but ask, don't assume). The gearbox radiator problem is only solved when the car shows symptoms despite it being a known problem.

I seem to recall a couple of threads about the reliabilty of Panoramic sun roofs, and the high cost of repair, apart from that it looks like a good spec
