Looks like the ring gear on my C200 CDi is gone - the starter won't engage when the engine is in one particular position, but does once I turn it 5 degrees either way. Anyone any idea's for where I get a ring gear cheaper than the stealership's £300? It's an A6110300112 !!

I've got an C200cdi engine here with a good flywheel, would you be happy with a used one?

Thanks! - a used one would be great - but unfortunately it's an auto, so it's not a flywheel - just a flexplate with the ring-gear on it.... It's going into the local indy on Tuesday next week to confirm but I suspect I'll be looking for a good used flexplate/ring-gear then!

There is an inspection plate that can be removed to check the ring gear.

This is an unusual fault though.

Not heard of the inspection plate - sounds interesting - I guess it's underneath as everything's tightly wrapped from above though... ( It's a W203...)

Is the inspection plate the little plastic cover (2x1" approx?) that pops out from underneath, or am I thinking of something else?

If you can see the ring gear to confirm the teeth on one side are dead you may find it is wide enough to remove turn around and refit?

Could be a slightly worn/damaged ring gear and also worn/damaged starter pinion in that case a new starter pinion would sort it out for now cheaply.

As Will says mine and the wifes have 2 little plastic inspection covers, but not sure if you can see the gear.

I would think the gear will be visible once the starter motor is removed ? The engine can then be hand cranked round to inspect all the teeth .

I remember having this problem about 30 years ago with my Ponton , that turned out to be a sticking starter motor which had damaged the ring gear besides its pinion . Got a new ring gear , at the time , for something like £30 and Western Auto Co heat shrunk it onto my flywheel FOC ; did the clutch at the same time ( clutch now needs doing again , after ONLY 28 years !!! ) .

Don't know about situation with auto version , but on my car flywheel was balanced as a unit with crankshaft and had to be replaced in same position - also fixing bolts cannot be re-used and new ones must be fitted .

Yes. There are 3 inspectio holes. One is covered with a triangular plastic cover

Can I get the starter off easily on a W203 C-class- I've heard rumours about dropping gearboxes to get starters off...:(

Just looked up part on EPC and the number you gave is a solid ring gear with a toothed flexi plate.

If the teeth in the ring gear are missing, then I'd be looking into why. As if everything is working fine then these should not break.
Could it be that someone in the past has tried to lock off the flywheel to remove the front crank pulley and broke a couple of teeth in the process ??
