anything that says Garmin on the box.

Having tried both, I think the Navteq maps used by Garmin are vastly superior to the tele atlas used by Tom Tom

TomTom has map share which means maps can be updated free every week though.

The problem with my Tom Tom one (second edition) updated maps etc etc. is when your in town and the roads (turnings) are close together, the thing is to slow to react, I am driving slow as well.
Also on the motorway at junctions it keeps saying 'keep right' at the junctions your not to come off at! why doesn't it just say nowt! :wallbash:
Apart from that it's brill. :p

P.S. the batteries are rubbish, they self discharge, in about 2 or so weeks, I have old mobile phones with the same battery tech. that don't and keep charged for months.

Update what though?

I've always had TomTom and just find them easier to use...

I have Garmin XT mobile on my phone and dad has Garmin in his car. They are just not imo as easy to use / update.

POI's, cameras, maps etc just seem much easier with the TomTom

Tom Tom Good. Navman NAFF!

I use tom tom go 910 which is good.

I used to have a NAVMAN that was the same as their customer service... Appallingly bad!

AVOID NAVMAN!

I use a tom tom one xl, & most of the time its excellent, its had a couple of confusing moments though. WHATEVER YOU DO,DONT BUY A SONY !!!!!

That is a good point.
There are a number of manufacturers who jumped onto the sat nav bandwagon & left when they found it a harder market than they thought.

Their products are still on sale bit you will get no support or updates for them.

there are a couple of Garmin's Nuvi 300 for sale in the ForSale section...

I have one of them, and its brilliant!

Have a read at THIS thread I had a major drama with sat navs. I eventually bought a TomTom one on ebay for £28 best deciscion i ever made could have wasted £'s never let me down and was an exact replacement of my original unit.

Almost every time you see one of these muppets on the news half way down a footpath, in a stream, stuck on on a railway line etc it turns out they are using a Tom Tom - that should tell you something

Yep, you can get weekly updates but they seem to be uploaded by the mouth breathers mentioned above - if weekly updates are that good why do Tom tom users keep ending up in ditches?

We've been using our Garmin for 18 months now with no problems. Too complicated? three screens to set an address either by posty code or address, it doesn' get any easier than that - if that's too hard then maybe it's time to think about getting on a bus rather than driving :)

Garmin have introduced a new upgrade system - maps are available on lifetime update for £100. These are not user submitted these are genuine surveyed updates up to the usual Navteq standards.

The speed camera database costs £40 a year and is updated twice weekly.

Our Garmin has no battery issues, works flawlessly, updates without isuue and has never let us down.

We had Tom Tom as well (given to us by a friend) but that ended up on Freecycle because it was useless.

I tried Garmin too before going back to TomTom its routings were shocking the ammount of fuel I would have wasted following its instructions would have cost me £'s easy to use yes clear display yes but to get you from A to B in the fastest possible time or shortest routing absolutely useless. Speed camera database is a joke, PGPSW on TT is by far the best.

I'll give you an example from where I live in Yorkshire to Ayr in Scotland, TT routes you via A1, A66, M6, M74, A70 straight in most direct route 244 miles. Route chosen by Garmin M1, M62, M606, A65, M6, M74, M73, M8, M77, A77. total mileage 288 nearly 20% more miles for no reason and 50 minutes longer journey time.

TomTom everytime for me, but stick to the basic ones not the fancy ones as they are just as good and not cluttered with Cr*p

When I see reports like this, it usually says their sat nav directed them down the wrong road, can't remember all these reports specifically stating that only TomToms did this.

And if someone is stupid enough to turn onto a railway line or anywhere else, they would probably still do it without a sat nav too.

My tomtom has taken us everywhere, Germany, Alps, all over France, Belgium, Netherlands etc etc.

Only bother i have ever had is not listening to the instructions properly and taking the wrong turn and thats my fault not the machine.

Naturally being a man i blame the machine:D cause we dont make mistakes:o
