Hello

Whats your budget and what do you use it for?

If your editing pictures and video then one with a seperate video card and more RAM / larger hard drive would be handy.

I would tend to stick to an Intel chip over and above AMD or other.. Intel range i3, i5 or i7.

Normal 32bit windows will only 'see' 3GB of ram whereas 64bit windows will see what you install so 8gb = uses 8gb.

All depends what you want it to do.

Just surfing, odd letter, excel, then I've been more than happy with two Toshiba models. Both 17" and have done very well over the years even little ones standing on the lids when shut!!.

Slightly older processor but still depends what you want check this...

Medion p8610 18.4" Laptop Core 2 Duo Only £349 @ Medion - HotUKDeals

You lost me on the ^,lol :o thinking around £500-£700.Toshiba has served me well over the years but is getting on a bit now

That's not a laptop

That's a desktop with a battery

I know what you mean but having had a 17.3 for years,it looks strange going for a smaller screen

^ Thats what I'm on now...

17.3 HP 'mobile workstation' i7 its great :)

£500 to £700 is a lot these days on a laptop (unless you goto Apple :)

Do you have any preference for brands?

Pretty much all makes will do a similar 'spec' with Christmas close if your in no rush there will be some great deals to be had.

I was looking today at PCWorld etc and Toshiba was the only one I liked in 17.3,I think It was the only 17.3 one anyway
I know Christmas deals are coming but I need it pretty soon though,by thursday to be more precise

I've been happy with two previous toshiba wide screen models,

Whats the spec like?

Try to get them to throw in a bag, extra warranty? if you need it by Thursday doesn't give you much chance to do the old internet searches and have it delivered even if you could find it cheaper? do pcworld price match? check the model and do a google search see what you can find.

Looking at 15" models for number 1 son as his has expired.
Current sites I'm looking at are
aria
simply acer
as thay seem to have reasonably speced machines at sensible prices

I bought a Samsung R730 17.3 for the misses earlier this year.

Got it for £492 albeit the predecessor to the i3/i5 chipset (4400/4500).

Excellent spec, looks good and so far has had no issues.

The Samsung turned out to be a pile of $h!t

As Samsungs tend to... look good, good spec, but ALL (without exception!) die on me just past the warranty period. I've stopped buying Samsung... err, almost... just bought a Blu-Ray/DVD drive for a computer I'm building

I also bought a Samsung for my missus earlier this year and whilst the build quality isnt all that if it is used as a trrue portable compute device, the peformance, the graphics, the spec per pound is VERY good.

As others hav said though it depends what you are going to use it for as to what you should go for and you havent really specified that need in any detail, but if it is general home use, with some photos iPhone syncing etc etc, then Samsung will serve you well as a good all rounder at a very good price - christmas sales dont really exist these days so dont hang around !

Yes but the Samsung did not even look good,it looked very cheap.I only bought it because it's spec and even that was not true as they had advertised it wrong
It said 8gb ram and 2x750 hard drive and it turned out to be 750hd instead of 2x750
Lucky I took a picture of the label on the shelf as by the time I went back (weeks later when the laptop started playing up) they had corrected their mistake and told me all they can do is replace the laptop with the same one
