Hi all,

My 1989 w124 300d has developed a weird phenomenon of clicking under braking at low speeds.

I had the wishbones replaced last year. My first thought was ball joint, but it doesn't make sense. It only happens at low speed, and I can feel it in through the pedal albeit very lightly.

I looked at other sources on the net and have found everything from calipers to pads could be responsible.

I'm going on an 1600 mile trip on Monday, and am worried. Could this be the ball joint cracking? Would the suspension fail at high speed?

Last year I asked about an indy merc specialist, and was recommended pcs in down the A3- will try them for servicing next time (after finally running out of patience with my indy) but require a local west London garage to check this....

Any suggestions on what it could be?

Does anybody have any experience with w4 auto?

Thank you all in advance,

Hi, thanks for your replies...

After extensive tests I noticed some gentle clicking also occurs when at very very low speed and turning the steering wheel left.

Would that fit the caliper greasing scenario?

Is there any way i can exclude the ball joint?

The front right also creaks when weight applied

I hope it is just the one problem... rather than a Greek tragedy few coming along at once...

rubbers in the steering might have gone due to the harsh winter we had check ball joint and steering rubbers, temp solution using liquid grease spray sock them all the noise will disappear but the problem is still their, try driving it at 70mph in the motorway then u will see steering might shake

thanks Nick...

it peeves me off... i had the arms replaced last year...

is this a dangerous thing? i ask because i'm going on a long trip tomorrow, and would ideally do this when i come back. but if cruising on the motorway at 90 is dangerous, i'll delay trip....

don't really want to wrap myself round a french motorway sign...

test it if the steering shakes at 70 that is yr problem drive at lower speeds under 70 mph u should ok were seat belts too, in case tire decide to leave the car (only joking)
