I have a 91 500sl and feel it is too quiet really after smapling my brother in laws TVR. Now, I don't want anything that noisy, but was wondering if there was an exhaust that any of you guys knew of that would put the noise somewhere in between the car as standard and the TVR, probably closer to the standard than the TVR. Also, can I have the cats removed and if so do I need the ECU re mapped and would it give me any more go anyhoo?

I look forward to your knowledge! Oh, and I want to maintain the standard look of the car!

IMO ECU remapping isn't going to give a huge gain you should feel some gain removing the cats, and fitting an aftermarket exhaust, there are a few people here who have AMG exhausts on the 500 and 55 engines they sound awesome

Good luck and keep us posted :)

You can have the centre muffler removed and replaced with straight-through pipe ... run some searches, several people have had this done (including me). That gives a little more noise, a tiny bit more power, and looks stock.

Cats are required for 93 onwards so you could have yours removed.

Don't forget to tell your insurers about any exhaust mods.

To be frank it's never going to sound like a TVR - remapping isn't possible on the early cars though you can have the chip replaced. It will be a little more responsive but don't expect massive gains.

If you're serious then I'd look at a camshaft or head replacement aka the Hammer AMG engines. You should get a bit more 'woofle' with a stainless exhaust - Eisenmann make some very nice ones.

I thought that if I removed the cats then the brain would need to be told, I'm not after too much more power as it is plenty fast enough for me, don't want to get into an ambition outweighing ability situation now! he he, also don't want the noise of a TVR, just some noise would be good! Sounds like removing the centre silencer is a good place to start. Thank you chaps

Swapping the rear box will give you the biggest change if you opt for a sports exhaust like a Remus, Eisenmann or Hayward & Scott custom job. You may not want to live with it all of the time however.

I have PSE on my car and it's the best of both worlds at a touch of a button :D :bannana: .

Ahh yes, is that the on off sports exhaust, I am very jealous, it sounds fantastic when it's in it's noisy mode, and none to shabby in silent mode!

Some of the early 500SL's did not have cats I think.
