hello,

my w210 estate's driver side mirror has been knocked off by some idiot who did the same to 2 other cars parked nearby and neglected to leave any insurance details (there are 2 other side mirrors on the road and one passenger-side mirror, presumably belonging to the culprit!).

unfortunately the glass component has been driven over and is now unserviceable.

having been quoted a ceiling of £400 by an independent specialist for full replacement of the mirror (housing, motor, etc) I am now wondering if it's possible to replace the mirror yourself? I'm no mechanic but am prepared to give it a go. It appears as though you can buy a full mirror setup for about £100 online.

any advice from those in the know? thanks.

The mirrors come in 3 parts, the base unit, the glass and the cover, which comes from MB in colour so no need to paint anything.

Has you mirror cover survived?

cover has survived although it's hanging off at a funny angle. will have a proper look once I am back from the doctors' and maybe put up some pictures.

That's very cheap, the driver's side is not only heated but self-dimming too, and the glass may be colour-matched to the tint of your windows.

BTW they are very easy to DIY.

FYI the motorized unit comes with the glass and is frighteningly expensive -
- but could be fitted by a 7yo in about 10 minutes,
- and just as easily removed if you leave them folded back.
