negotiating a smart diesel

27mpg on a 30mile run! Ouch! :o

I assume the petrol tank isn't leaking or you've left he handbrake on? :D

Seriously that sounds pretty poor, I reckon you should be seeing more like mid-30s on a 30 mile run?

Dont forget I'm battling across west london round the M25 in rush hour 30 miles takes 1.5hours.

Its hardly a run.

Fair enough :)

Just had an update and i think I am making some progress.

They have a car in the docks in Zeebrugge (unregistered), A passion in black with red interior. Due to ship to the UK on Nov 30 - £800 off list.

£2000 deposit
36 months @ £128.68 per month inc

Considered moving instead of the Smart?

Just kidding.

Ian at Star Motors in Caversham has a Smart but he only lives 10 minutes away from his work. I've driven it & found it very choppy on the ride, otherwise OK. Don't know that I'd fancy it for a longish commute.

BTW, his courtesy cars are 190E 2.0 autos.

I dont think a new smart makes financial sense over the 190E and certainly not as comfortable.. but everyones preferences are different.
When I was in london, I used the scooter all year round, as sitting in traffic for over an hour to move spitting distances wound me up no end.
Also parking was always an issue for me in the city... id have to park a good 20 minutes walk away at least.

However its dangerous in winter, no doubt... and blooming freezing.

So £6608 to end up with a car you won't own in 3 years time?

What sort of milage do they allow you over the rental period?

Would an Oyster card not make more sense?

LOL @ an oyster card. Commuting by public transport costs £600 per month and takes 6 hours a day. So 18,000 over three years with nothing to show for it.

I probably wont go over the 10k per year because I will still do a couple of thousand miles in the SL and another couple of thousand on the bike regardless just because its nice to alternate when the weather permits.

I agree £6608 sounds bad for 3 years motoring but you're forgetting that I probably spend over £1500 per year (excluding fuel) just to run the 190.( insurance tax, servicing and maintenance) The Smart shouldnt be anything like that.

Annual Travelcard (zones 1-6) is £2016, which works out at £168 per month. What journey are you doing that it would take 3 hours each way?

I live near Kingston and commute to Gerrards cross (near slough).

The journey consists of two buses, two trains and a taxi for the last step (each way).

Ill be following this, im toying with getting a couple as courtesy cars.
Most likely ill go for low mileage used cars...

I don't think there is the slightest spec of courtesy shown in using a Smart as a loaner.

And yes I have driven a Smart car. Loan me a 190/124 and I am your friend for life.

Can you LPG a 190 carb? If yes what do the figures look like?

I think SS201 has an LPG conversion on one of his 190s. Either that or his fuel filler is in a very odd place.

I must admit I like driving the 190E but having done the maths, with fuel prices going the way they are, I'm not sure bangernomics makes any sense anymore since the biggest motoring expense bar none here is the fuel spend - even when comparing against a car with zero depreciation.

If you recall I was deliberating over the same thing 18 months ago and I decided to go for the 190E in preference to a newish car. Having done so and tried it for a year and found that this route cost me close on £5k to get to work and back for 12 months, I suspect that I will save a bob or two doing it the otherway.

I guess the cheapest motoring of all would be to find an old Peugeot 309 Diesel or something equally horrible to commute in but frankly I'm not at all keen in spending my Saturdays keeping the damn thing alive.

What about one of those new Skoda 1.2 TDi thingies?

They reckon to do about 83mpg and they're about £200 a month on lease.
