You dont want to go near 3G whilst roaming unless you have really deep pockets.

As with all of these netbooks, the screen size is frankly just too small to use with any regularity.

Get a Samsung NC10

We have three laptops in our household currently.

Mrs B has a 16.4" Vaio FW11.

I have a 15.4" Vaio N31 and also a 10" Samsung NC10.

I rarely use my vaio now as its too big and heavy to lug around airports when I'm travelling.

I use the NC10 regularly and have loaded it with Office 2007 Ultimate and loads of other software. It has a 160GB hard drive, weighs 1.3kg, bluetooth, wifi, 3 usbs etc etc.

I've upgraded the memory to 2gb and it runs fine.

I dont know how i managed to live without it.

Its great!

Check out amazon and other websites for review.

When I got it I looked at the lenovo and other machines but theres nothing but praise for the NC10 (mine is white).

I would definately recommend it.

If you do go for it you dont need to buy a pouch as it comes with one.

All I need now when I travel is my nc10 and an external slimline dvd drive i bought from amazon as well as my trusty wireless numerical keypad (i do a lot of number crunching).

One of my colleagues has a 9" netbook which is actually too small.

10" is just fine. If I need aything larger for spreadsheets plug in an external monitor.

Also, did I mention that i get 5 hours out of the samsung on battery power?

You can apparently get up to 7 hours!

Hope this helps,

KJ

kbhagolW126...

When you upgraded the NC10 memory did you replace the 1gb with a 2gb module? Or just add another 1gb module?

The NC10 caught my eye (literally), not looking for one at the moment but seeing one in the flesh it was very impressive, buiild quality, screen etc.

Incidentally - Samsung just announced NC20, so should be good deals on the NC10.

I bought a 2gb module from amazon.

I think it was about £15 or so from memory.

I also have a Samsung NC10... fantastic system. I have put Windows 7 on mine, works very nicely. I have upgraded mine to 2GB also, although removing the memory cover on the bottom of the system was a bit un-nerving as it bends a lot before unclipping! I will also be upgrading the disk to either an SSD or a 7,200 rpm disk.

At work we've tried out the Toshiba NB100 and Dell Mini 9, neither of which I found to be particularly good. On the tosh the keys are too small for my liking, and the Dell has a shiny screen which is unusable in all but perfect lighting conditions.

I use my Eee Pc 904 every evening and the battery lasts about 4 hours. If it ever breaks and I have to replace it I would certainly go for a 10 inch screen over the 8.9 inch one I have.

I worried over the small screen but the lightness, battery life and the fact that I tend to just use it for surfing the net.

I use my eee PC 1000h every day and its brilliant :) no complaints.

Got it up to 2gb and windows XP pro is nice and fast :)

I had a Dell Inspiron Mini 9 for a while through one of the companies I work for. Nice machine, but the design was a bit plastic-y and the solid state hard drive was APPALLINGLY slow. It got faster after I reformatted it with FAT32 instead of NFTS but it was still pretty dire. I never had any problems with the screen tho.

I was going to buy an MSI Wind U120 / Wind 2, when it's released, but it's going to be limited to 1Gb RAM because they removed the RAM slot to fit in a SIM card slot for the on-board 3G modem. So I looked at the MSI Wind U100 (the current one), which reads really well on paper, I just don't care much for the design.

Which leaves me with the Samsung NC10, which I think looks great, a lot less "cheap" than the Wind, and is similar in spec to the Wind. Only downsides are that it doesn't have 802.11n networking, and doesn't run OS X as easily as the Wind does, but that's not the end of the world as when I'm not travelling, I'm planning on playing with Linux on it!
