...Next job to fit a detachable tow bar!

Have identified a supplier but if any one out there has one to sell I am interested?

Having looked underneath God only knows where they fit one? Seems terribly tight...anyone got one fitted?

Thanks

Never seen an R129 with a towbar fitted so I doubt anyone here has done it! I know mine is rated to pull 1500kg though. Ones registered from 1st Aug 1998 onwards can't have a towbar fitted as the R129 didn't have EC type approval for towing.

The SLShop does them, as does rameder.eu. Not cheap, though.

...these are the two sources I identified, although the SL shop were pretty useless / clueless when I discussed my requirements with them...when I asked them if their custom made item was detachable they highlighted the image on their site showing a standard 2 bolt fixed tow ball? When I suggested this wasn't detachable they informed it was when unbolted!

And despite their glossy 'customer service' promise, they never phoned me back or returned my emails requesting information?

Watling towbars list one for the 129 and although it is a flange fixing the flange and rear section unbolts from the main bar. So for occasional use a bit of a faff but still useable.
I have one of this type for my 107 from this maker.

PMB26DT says it has a detachable rear section for neatness.

On my CLK 320 they removed a large rear section of the car/bumper, to bolt in a complete new unit. Mine just unclips and lowers out. Sockets swing up underneath. Completely obscured when put away, so you would not know it has one.

where did you get your towbar from, will it fit my 1999 sl500

As above it's illegal to fit a towbar to an SL that was registered on or after after 1st August 1998.

Have just been reading through the owners manual of my 1999 320 SL and there is a section specifically for towbars, fitting and operation. The EPC shows all the parts for a detachable towbar for a 1999 car so Im just wondering where you get this 'illegal' stuff from?

Wow I thought all you SL boys were dark shades leather jacket and a good looking girl on your arm, this view is totally shattered by you wanting to pull a caravan with your sports car

The manual is likely to be a global one, and not UK (or even EU) specific. In other parts of the world there may not be any legislation at all relating to towbars.

In the UK, if your car was registered on or after 1 August 1998 and doesn't have a 'gross train weight' specified on the VIN plate then it's not been put through the EC type approval process for towing and you can't use it for this:

If it does have a train weight then any towbar you fit must have EC type approval for your particular vehicle/model:
