Further details of Mercedes new 4matic system as fitted to the new Mercedes A class saloon coupe and forthcoming 4x4 crossover. Designed for the transverse engined models it should not be confused with the constant 4WD centre differential 4matic system as fitted to the larger 4WD Fore and Aft engined models. It does appear to be capable of transmitting large amounts of torque though despite its compact size. With its multiplate hydraulic clutch rear differential its similar to the Haldex systems fitted to transverse VG models and some Subaru models. It would appear the propshaft is constantly driven with the rear differential activated "on demand"
