Does anyone know if the new AMG engine is a completely new engine built by AMG. Or is it the current 5.5 NA mercedes engine with two turbo chargers added on by AMG?

Sorry I dont know the details, but guessing by the power output of AMG NA engines, I'd say they're probably fairly high compression engines. And adding turrbo's would require them to lower the compression.
But then I'm guessing they'd just change few internals on the current engine, to lower the compression (in which case im not sure if they'd classify it as a different engine). Sorry I couldnt answer the question, as such, but there's some food for thought.

Hi mate, they are a totally new engine as far as i know!

I also thought it was brand new but by looking at the spec of it, it seems similar to the current 5.5 NA V8.

Both engines have exact same cc, bore and stroke. Could this be a coincidence?

Also it would not suprise me if its the same engine or its been heavily reworked as BMW M will stop making "all new" engines. The X5M/ X6M have got uprated BMW engines.

Thats what I am thinking and wasnt sure as the dsplacement is exactly the same in both engines at 5461cc. Going back to 2002 all AMG did for the E55k engine was take the old 5.5 NA AMG engine (which was an original 5 litre mercedes engine bored out to 5.5 with new internals and crankshaft etc) and add a supercharger to it.

Got me thinking this time have they just done the same thing except its turbochargers instead?

To be honest even if its the same engine, the spec on it is really good anyway. Its better than the equivalent Audi V10 TT and BMW V8 TT.

As you say the 55k engine was an old design, but look at the final result. It was a fantastic engine. It may of had some out dated technology like SOHC 3 valves per cylinder but i still think its better than the 6.2 AMG V8.

On the road, there was not much of a difference but this was mainly due to the 5 speed gearbox in the 55k compared to the 7 speed in the 63.

Also the "new" 4.6 turbo engine in the E500,S500, etc seems like they have just turbocharged the standard 4.6 engine found in the gl450.
