Hello MBClub!

My name is Dave, I'm a 21 year old student and I drive a W123 230CE. I'm a member on retrorides (although don't post much) and used to be a regular on pug306.net incase there are any familiar faces lurking??

I bought the car about 6 months ago now off of retro rides for £500. Spent another £450 getting it welded up, MOT'd and Taxed. Unfortunatley it has recently cost me more money than I should've ever spent on a car of this value....but who can put a price on love right!?
It suffered a bizarre overheating problem after spitting out its coolant all over the M3 one fine summers evening on my way back from Uni. Eventually turned out to be a dead rad... so that was about £300 spent. Then about 4 weeks later the head gasket went pop.... and after failing miserably at replacing it myself, £550 later it lives again. It was so expensive because I bought all the bits from Merc, and also a few other jobs had to be done such as welding out a mahoosive crack in the exhaust *****mold.

It still has some rather nasty issues, the main one being an almost comatosed gearbox which can be a real pain to live with. Theres also a few funny noises coming from the suspension. And its not looking too great on the rust front either.

I haven't really done anything to the car apart from spend money on keeping it alive. It was lowered when I bought it and also has a nice bassy sub where the first aid kit usually sits

SO... without further ado

Sorry for the old pics, and also the ever-so-slightly scummy backdrop. The cars unfortnatley looking a little worse for wear these days.

I hope there are a few W123 gurus on here, I have quite a few questions to ask!

Welcome on board Dave. :)

You'll get plenty of information and advice on this forum.
They're a friendly bunch and clever with it. :thumb:

Welcome to the forum. :)

Hi mate,

Looks good , something different about the front ? Lights ?

Welcome along. Plenty of folk "down south" will help you keep your car going. Though any area is a good area to keep a classic Merc going. Lots of knowledge on here from the "elders" who are never far away to assist.

Welcome, but, bought all my bits from MB !!! OUCH !!!

I know I know... schoolboy error! It's because I was attempting to do it myself and everywhere I read for info online was saying "get decent quality parts from MB, you don't want to do the job twice".

There certainly seems to be! Been reading on here for 10 minutes and already it would appear there is a great mechanic by the name of 'Steve' local to Bromley, AND a great mechanic by the name of 'Ollie' local to me when I'm at Uni in Southampton! SWEET!

And for parts , go to Euromerc. Even if it isn't listed on the site , Nick will probably have what you need at half MB's price ...

Hiya :)

I beleive the insides of the lights have been painted black, as have the slats on the grille. I think they're a grey colour as standard.

I had a white W124 230CE , love the 123 series though , my Dad had a W123 280TE years ago .....

Welcome home

Hello and welcome.

Welcome to the forum, nice ride :).

Hope it doesn't dig a bigger hole in your pocket!! But i can tell you that just from those pictures, i think she's a beauty.

Hello and welcome.

Thanks for posting up some pictures, that's a seriously cool looking car to have at Uni. Very nice...

If it was up to my Dad, I'd have been in a W124 coupe too. I'd probably say they represent the better value for money right now. They're around the same price, if not cheaper, and are just that bit younger to offer more reliability.
But I love shiny metal much more than 90's plastic bumpers... even if it is surrounded by rust haha.

Thanks man :), me too!

What do your Uni colleagues say about the car ?

Do they understand 'it all' ?

Not at all :(. Well some do, a lot of the guys think its cool, and the odd girl too. But I'd say the majority of my friends don't get it all, which can get really frustrating after hearing the same "Why don't you just get a nice modern car instead of spending all your money on that old rusty thing!?" over and over.....
What I love about my car is when I take it out, 9 times out of 10 I never see another one on the road.
My friends have nice cars, and yeah sometimes I think I'd love to have the mod cons that they have, but when you see ten more just like the one your sitting in drive past you, it takes the novelty away.

Thank you all for the warm welcomes!
