C300D [2019]
Hi all,
Little intro as it's my first post. Just purchased a new C300d AMG-Line Premier as a replacement for my Audi A4 3.0 (218 Quattro) which is now over 3 years old. First impressions of the car are pretty good, it looks nice, drives well, and obviously the tech is a little more up to date. Couple of problems which I'm having to have it booked into the dealers for next week - the top few inches of the rear screen don't de-mist with the heater and the metal trim on the boot lid is coming off at one side. A bit dissapointing for a new car, but hopefully will get it sorted. Booking into the dealers was a nightmare though - Mercedes of Blackburn - endless amounts of time on hold, being told I'd be called back but wasn't etc. I ended up having to drive into the showroom and wait 20 minutes to see someone. Not the kind of customer service I'd expect - the Audi dealership over the road which I've used for the past 7 years have always been fantastic. So that's a bit of a shame. Only other things I miss is the Quattro drive and the Audi interior - the C class feels a bit cheap compared to the A4 - for example, the C Class has "fake" metal which is made of plastic around the knobs etc, whereas in the A4 that is actual aluminium. Also shutting the boot lid sounds really really "tinny" - you have to slam it somewhat else it bounces back up, but when you do, it sounds like it's made of thing sheet metal - i.e. just not "solid" construction.
But that aside, I do really like the car.

Anyway - the reason for this post is that I've noticed when the wipers are on and I switch off the engine, the wipers stay in whatever position they are at when I open the door - i.e. they don't return to a "parking position". Now this might be by design, but I really can't believe on a modern car that would be the case??
Just to be clear, this is the procedure I'm taking - which might be wrong somehow?? Heavy rain, and wipers on automatic (second setting).
- Reverse into a parking space.
- Press the "P" button to switch to Parking gear.
- Press engine start/stop button.
- At this point the wipers still work until you exit the car.
- When the wipers are mid-swipe, open the door. They stop right there halfway up the screen, and don't return to the bottom.

Is this right? Or am I missing something??

Thats exactly how they work, it's now 2nd nature to turn off the wipers before exiting the car. Bad practice to leave wipers on auto when leaving car as mechanism can be damaged if blades freeze to screen.

Also it's a deliberate feature as there is no 'access wipers' setting as on some makes

Don't select P just stop the Engine, then wait till the Wipers move to their Park Position before you open the door!

Why would you slam the boot shut when there's a switch on the upper left edge to electronically close it ???

Ok, well if that's how it is, I guess it's tough lol. Never known any other modern car do that - they always at least return to the bottom of the screen, not stop halfway up. Oh well.

Also, I don't want to have to turn them off every time I leave the car - that completely defeats the point of auto wipers. If it's freezing I'll switch off before starting the engine.

Not on mine - boot is a manual close??

I always leave my wipers on auto, and they have never parked / stopped halfway across the screen.
But I have never thought about it to be honest,.

I've never thought about it really either, because every car I've had has had the wipers not stop midway across the screen. Only noticed because this is different.

That said, it was chucking down with rain this morning yet as I walked across the work carpark (which is huge), not a single other car had wipers not in a parking position. 90% of those cars arrived during the rain, so I'd have thought if it was a common thing to not go to a parking spot, at least a few would have had wipers up. Mercedes included in that, but none same model as mine. This is why I thought I must be doing something different/wrong!?

The OP must be young and predates vacuum powered wipers (the slower you go the slower the wipers), or manually operated wipers, or single speed wipers..

Maybe - but he is right!
In this day and age it is ridiculous that Mercedes wipers do not self park properly when turning the engine off and/or exiting the car.
I suppose with my distronic cruise control, speedtronic limiter, steering assist, braking assist and lane control Mercedes left the wipers for me to park so that I feel I’ve been driving!

Yeah, before my time...

At least I know it's "by design" now, so I'll just have to time getting out of the car right if I don't want the wipers across the screen.

Thanks all :)

"the top few inches of the rear screen don't de-mist with the heater"

So - took the car in today for this, only to be told by the technician that it's meant to be like that and it's for the phone/sat nav antenna! Apparently old models have the shark-fin ariel, however newer ones have it build into the rear screen at the top. Fair enough, but surely someone could have told me that when I went in on the day to book it. Grrrrr.....
Left it with them to look at the metal trim on the boot anyway. They said they might not be able to do anything with it, but will try their best.
