According to this months Mercedes Enthusiast - the new CLC has the "latest Comand with hard drive".

So my question to my the experts is....

Will it fit in my car? W203 Saloon.

Thanks

Brian

The COMAND is self contained so i don't see why not but most of the other components on the bus will be paperweight's.

COMAND would read various info from the CAN bus (or actually more than one CAN bus), I guess this would be "standard" over different MB models, the new unit would get the same info from a W203 as it reads from a W204 (or writes, like towards the IC)?

This is an interesting topic, one which we intend to find an answer to ;)

As soon as I can get hold of a new unit I will test it in a W203 (and others).

I can't see any problem with the CAN BUS at all, the MOST BUS on the other hand is different.

The new COMAND uses different components on it so if you have thing's like a phone module don't expect it to work with a new unit, it's not backwards compatible.

The W204 based CLC certainly does not conform to the W203 based C. Not in terms of dimensions.

If both cars are W203 based chassis then the navigations are identical if they are both 2005+.

CLC is a glorified 203

In the 203 body it used DVD based COMAND and in the new body it uses HDD based.

Thanks for the insight on the CAN-bus compatibility. I did not comment on the MOST ring devices as I already trusted on your "paperweight" comment. Just wanted to check the CAN-bus side (specifically when the W203 seems to have only CAN-B connected while the W204 has both CAN-A and CAN-B connected).

But you seemed to state that CLC is actually based on W203 and has less common with W204 than one could assume, I did not consider that.

No worries.

Under the skin its just a 203 sport's coupe so the unit is kind of a middle ground between the new HDD stuff and the old DVD setup, kind of like the unit in the facelift SLK class so they both only use a CAN-B for the interior data bus.

CAN A is just the rear-screen CANBUS. CAN-A controls the back seat passengers.

Does someone have a photo of W203 HDD based navigation ? I thought that was a W204 thing.

In terms of size and shape it looks the same.

Am I missng something here, the 204 has a pop up screen seperate from the Comand head unit, and the dash is a different shape

But if this new HDD Comand can't run a telephone -- what's the point of adding one to a W203?? Or did i misread ?

We worked on a new C63 today  which had comand with built in bluetooth. It paired with an iphone but not a blackberry. It seems the built in bluetooth on these cars is not as comprehensive as the HFP cradle at the very least!

I have not seen one of these new CLC comand units but we think it will plug straight into a W203. However, whether it will work with other devices already installed is another matter. Time will tell.

Can POI be added via the hard drive? i.e. speed cameras?
