Hi All

I've just purchased a new gear knob for my c32 as the orginal was a chipped and worn out.

Is they a method to removing and installing said knobs? Or is it just a case of using reasonable force  to remove and install .

Thanks

Swoz

There is usually a twist/screw threaded collar at the bottom of the gearknob. Sometimes it can be difficult to move it with your fingers due to the shiny finish. Try a rubber glove for extra grip :)

It should be noted that the plastic ring may be under the gaitor and not immediately visible / obvious.

So just twist and screw? No tread though!

Yep and the gaiter...

Whatever you do, don't look down at the knob when you tug.

Cos its soo stiff, you will get a faceful!

Did anyone actually put a serious response?

You all just taking the piss out of the newbie aren't you!!! :wallbash: ;)

No, seriously,

When I fitted my ipod interface I found the long knob sooo stiff that it needed a damned good yank.

But... do it at arms length or it will come off suddenly and catch you in the face.

Remove gear knob and surround.

Pull up the edge of the gearknob, and then turn the locking ring at the bottom of the gearknob anti-clockwise (i.e not the natural way you would expect) half a turn and pull the gearknob upward to remove.

Picture of the locking ring.

I changed my knob on a BMW and almost knocked myself out....I can laugh afterward but it really hurt...

:)

Years ago a friend of mine was trying to change the knob on an old Astra. He ended up punching himself in the face as it suddenly broke free! The knob was bonded on and left a big mess behind (stop laughing).

Call me childish but this thread has had me in stitches.

Me too

although a serious subject it has helped bring a smile to my face and helped me to face the wonderfull journey home. Hope the change goes well and BTW need to do the same on my 98 sl, the knob has been rubbed raw and cleaning it just makes it worse.

I swapped mine when I first bought my C32, but I swapped it for another original part.

At the time I was told by the dealer that the knob and gaitor are one unit, and when I got my replacement it didn't look like it would come apart.

I decided to ask the dealer to do it when it went in for service or warranty work, and it took them seconds.

That looks like a non-original part and so you may need to butcher your existing unit to get the gaitor off it, and attach to the new one.
