New h7 led test w209

I've worked on an r8 and in all honesty the led headlights were definitely brighter than a normal halogen bulb. Cant imagine audi spending all that money to downgrade their lights

I drove Audi's R8 test cars round the ring at night one with xenons the other with LED when they were first developed. Lap times were significantly slower with LED not just mine but the two other test drivers too. The depth of penetration is just not there compared to xenon that and there's too Many shadows and dark spots.

You probably right and in hindsight they are probably better than halogen but I'd never spec them over xenon

I agree thats why i stated led headlights will not surpass xenon

I worked on a Scania ate the weekend that had Auxiliary Laser lighting, now that's bright, LED's will always be crap as a headlight unless you have the correct optics to channel the light, LED's in normal lights designed for filament bulbs with just look crap, with poor light control.

Your comment would be useful if we was talking about the dipped beam but if you read the thread, this is for the main beam, sorry to sound rude but this happens on every thread about other types of lighting.

I do this for a living and i hate led dipped headlights, but led sidelights are proving very popular and so are these led main beam lights.

On an American forum, I've seen aftermarket LED main/dip bulbs that are as good as halogen with what looks like a well controlled beam pattern.

I don't think it will be long before they are a viable upgrade.

Ted what your referring to is the led kit i spoke about earlier, im just awaiting shipment one a test set and will report on brightness and beam pattern

For RHD?? ;)

if im not mistaken the bulbs themselves do not matter, its the angle of the headlight lens that determines what country they are for, as far as i am aware these new led lights work the same way as xenons, they use led chips that use a sort of ballast to up the power.

below is an image of what they look like

I'm quite interested in these, I have a 2005 320 with factory HIDs and drive mainly in town so don't necessarily need the range {of beam}.

I just have three questions about the fitment if you wouldn't mind clearing them up.

How did you secure the bulbs into the housing? As in the CLK they are secured by screws which act upon forms in the bulb holder.

Also there are multiple wires going to the bulb holder, does this still just plug into the harness for the resistors?

I'm assuming that the removable cover in the headlight housing has to be modified to accommodate the additional length of the bulb (behind the mounting face) and to route the wires in and out of the housing for the resistors.

Hi the led in the video is just a normal bulb, the one picture above is the kit i am waiting for, i realised it will be difficult to fit in mercs with the screws to hold them but ill find a way and ill get back to you.

Thank you very much for your quick reply.

I think extending the cover should be quite simple and mounting the resistors remotely for that matter, should be just a couple of holes and grommets.

I have to admit I have only had a quick look at the bulb mounting and not removed the holder from the bulb, so I'll go and have another look.

I look forward to seeing how you get on with the (proper) bulbs and what you come up with to fit them.

The supplier has informed me that the fan can be removed when mounting the bulb so should make it easier
