Hi All,

I picked up my 2003-53 E320 cdi avantgarde auto estate yesterday.

This morning when the car had been left overnight and the engine/gearbox was cold the gearbox was horrible.

Up and down changes really were rough and the whole car shook.

When the engine is warm the problem goes away 90% and the changes are much better.

The car does not creep forward either? Is this normal?

Have I purchased a lemon?

I cannot find any detail of gearbox oil changes....where do I start with this problem?

Are there any MB or gearbox specialist in or around Berkshire that come highly recommended??

Help

PS.....I cant get the bonnet open either. I pull the lever but only oneside seem to be open and the little handle in the grill does not pop out.

Yes sort of shudder/shook!

Oh jeez. I've brought a lemon then!

With this problem will it be better when the engine and gearbox are warmed up?

You'll need to get the gearbox flushed and new ATF. It will probably need refurbed but you might be ok. Its a problem that doesn't go away and can knacker the box.

Plus you'll need a new rad that doesn't leak coolant.

Seriously, if you bought it from a garage, return it at all costs, this could cost you over £1500 to fix. If you bought it privately, you'll best get it fixed and you now know why the vendor sold it.

If the car is in C (Comfort) mode, it could be. Mine in C doesn't creep.

However, with the issues you are having, I would reserve judgement and a trip down to PCS or similar might be worthwhile!

Give 3D Transmissions a call they will be able to help you

Epic dodgyness on MB's part. I'm really shocked at that.

Reading between the lines two of the actions are not covering a known fault by warranty and, I can't possibly see how they can get out of this one, selling used cars with a known potential problem. Unfortunately it'll take years before a decision is made.
There's another one on going about a fuel tank problem on the E class http://www.topclassactions.com/laws...benz-defective-fuel-tank-class-action-lawsuit

I presume they'd done the math and it's cheaper to be slimy and shirk your responsibilities than to sort these issues out (ignoring morality completely)...

May be one of the reasons why MB goodwill isn't as good as it use to be?

I will call 3D Transmissions, tomorrow.

I went to see someone who specialise in MB today and they had a drive and thought that a simple "oil service" on the box might sort it!

Fingers crossed.

Lack of creep and poor changes sounds like low ATF to me.

New ATF to the correct level might sort this.

Hi All,

I have an update:

The car has now had a gearbox service. The oil and filter were changed......so....

.....The car is 90% better !

When the engine and gearbox are cold the changes are a little bumpy. Both up and down. It also makes a slight feathering when you come off the throtle and the gearbox tries to manage the down changes.

When the gearbox and engine have warmed up the car is excellent.

I might live with it and see how it goes. Considering I have only had the car for a couple of weeks, I've had my fair share of problems.

Oh and the car seems to drive much better and smoother in S mode.
