Car
2002 C32 Estate
Hello folks,

I'd been swithering over which car to buy recently, and finally after much deliberation landed on a Mercedes. The dilema then became which model.

I like estates, typically the faster models, and so had been thinking about a C32, but most of those I spoke to who had Mercedes had suggested an AMG wouldn't be the best model to go for as a first entry into the marque.

With that in mind I went from looking at faster to classic and found my head being turned by the S124. I found one locally that looked in decent condition amn had arranged to go and see it on Saturday morning, having carried out an HPI check on the Friday night.

Unfortunately, on Friday night i got caught up in the good work the Admin's are doing to keep the site free from spanners and managed to get banned, which made my last minute cramming on things to look out for when viewing the car a bit problematic. Fortunately i'd made some notes and had a copy of the Mercedes Enthusiast August issue where they had a buying guide on the car, with large contributions from a forum member it seems.

I have been running a Subaru Legacy estate, an imported twin turbo model from Japan. It's been lowered and run's on Bilstein suspension, so they ride would make even a BMW feel like a magic carpet. The S124 seems larger, partly because i feel higher up i guess, but the ride quality is just fabulous. The short drive convinced me this would be a pleasant car to run for a while and see how I get on with it.

So, three owners before me, well actually two as the original owner had purchased it for his wife within his company, then moved it to private ownership. The last owner only had it a few months, but with a new job meaning a much longer commute, he was looking for something more economical.

The history is fairly comprehensive, starting with a MB main dealer, and then for some reason switching to a VW/Audi dealer. A few invoices have been for more than I paid for the car, with a load of other less eye watering bills. A load of old mot's confirm the mileage at just under 122k.

The exterior of the car has the usual front wing issues as well as assorted scraped and bumps on the bodywork and bumper. The interior is a mushroom leather which is dated but in good condition. The wheels are corroded but not dinged, so shoul hopefully come up well following a refurbish. The coolant system shows no sign of mayonnaise, even though the head gasket was last changed at 60k miles. I can't find any mention of the wiring loom being replaced, but I also can't see any problems with it yet. One cable does seem to be snapped in the engine bay, and i'll post a pic of it in the relevant section to see if anyone can help identify it.

Features of the car are, it's a 280 model, has leather, (or possibly MB Tex, though i'm not sure how i tell) air conditioning, (i think based on what the manual says) a sunroof, seven seats, cruise control, blaupunkt sound system with cd changer.

It does have a few issues, the snapped cable mentioned earlier, the cruise control doesn't seem to work (may be related to the cable), and the electric aerial isn't playing. I did check the sunroof worked as i've read that can be expensive to fix, but i've just discovered while it will slide it won't tilt, but hey ho.

Finally a couple of pictures:

Good to see another W124 estate owner here - welcome!. Definitely leather - MB tex has narrower vertical folds.

Edit - you might want to photoshop out your number plate details, just in case.

Hello
Welcome to the forum
Looks a nice tidy Mercedes :thumb:

That's the very car Akash. It had been on last year for more money and I had thought about it then, though I wouldn't have fancied the rear wheel drive in the weather we had.

It came back up again recently so I went to have a look and following the drive managed to get it for less than the asking price. I'd been to a shop in Edinburgh looking at a new goretex suit to wear on my motorbike, and as the salesman was talking me into it, I suddenly realised the suit was going to cost more than the car.

Welcome to the forum. It's good to see another Scottish member on here.:thumb:

W124's are great cars.

That's a leather interior. There is no separate Cruise Control amplifier on the late cars so the problem is likely to be a wiring fault

welcome to the forum ilike the car its a nice colour

Nice looking car - very similar to the 300TE-24 I used to have , also in Almandine Red with Mushroom Leather . Yours is genuine leather ( Tex seats have the slats running vertically , not horizontally as in yours ) .

Wiring loom is something to keep an eye on in the M104 280 ; sunroof problem could just be limit switches needing adjustment ( most likely if operating otherwise ) ; check hydraulic pipes for SLS underneath in vicinity of rear suspension as they often corrode there ( pipes themselves are cheap , but a lot of labour to fit ) .

Hi Roamer,welcome to the forum.

Hi

Welcome

Acid

Thanks for the welcome everyone, i'm really enjoying the car so far and that's with me barely being out in it.

Nasco12 - I had registered my account but not done anything with it for over a week, so I guess this was flagged as suspicious. One of the motorbike forums I visit is having a lot of trouble at the moment from hackers and spammers, so it just seems preventative action by the Admins. No harm done.

Nick - Thanks again for the useful guide. I've found a snapped cable leading from an actuator arm type thing at the front of the engine, so if I trace that back to the other end and replace it, that may cure the cruise control issue.

Derek - I'd read about the self destructing looms, but always good to be reminded, I'll check it over carefully and see if anything needs to be replaced. I've a Haynes manual on order which should be here in the next day or two, so i'll do some investigating of the sunroof issue then. I'm finding the switches a little odd at the moment, so i'll pop out the overhead light panel and see if it's just adjustment that's needed.
Hopefully it's as simple as my problem with the trip odometer not resetting, no matter how hard I pushed and fiddled with the clock adjusting knob .....
The hydraulic pipes were replaced front to rear on the off side in late 2008. Other than the expense i'm not sure why only one side was replaced, but i've been going through the service history again this evening, and i've discovered the invoices for 2005 and 2007 are missing. The book has been stamped though and since the (VW/Audi) dealer is near where I work i'll pop in tomorrow morning and ask if I can get a copy of the old invoice. I'd feel better knowing both sides have been done, but i'll also try to get underneath the car at the weekend for a visual check.
