I have just managed to acquire a 1997 R170 SLK230 Kompressor in Briillant Silver. I've had a few cars in my lifetime, (and Bikes) and have bought this car following a couple of accidents in my last two vehicles in the last seven months. One was an mid-life-crisis MGF 1.8VVC which was side swiped by an artic on the M25 last Halloween evening which didn't stop, the other was a daily driver, an Alfa Romeo Mito which was written off on the new A5 - M1 link road roundabout at the end of the A505 by a Golf driver who didn't know where he was going.
Anyway, a friend of the family had the SLK available in his garage as he could no longer drive for health reasons for a number of years, so it was a no-brainer but to buy it. I must admit that I had never considered a Mercedes before but needs is as needs must. For a twenty year old car it's in what I would consider in excellent good condition. When I bought it the total mileage was only just over 56k, it's only done 1600 miles in the last five years. The best bit is that it was bought for £1000! My colleagues are astonished I got it for that.
Anyhow, I've had it 'B' serviced by an independent specialist in Welwyn Garden City, and it's had a safety check as I am using it every day to get to work, (around 400 miles a week). When I first got the car I was reluctant to try the Vario roof, but the garage confirmed that it worked first-time, amazing considering that it hadn't been cycled for the last eight years.
I like to find out about every detail on vehicles I own so you can expect quite a few enquiries and questions on the details of the car and I thought MBClub UK was the best option; lot's of American websites available but there seem to be too many differences between European cars and those across the pond. I like to fettle them to my requirements and have already treated the leather interior with Gliptone for a start, there are a couple of carpark ding's on the nearside which I'll tackle at a later date. I'll get some pic's up if anyone's interested.
