Car
1995 Mercedes 280 Estate
Hello all

Having never been a member of a car club or posted anything online, this is a novel and dare I say nervy experience. Whatsmore, I am unsure if I even qualify as an enthusiast, but I do like the car I have just purchased and have always wanted one! So, with the disclosures out of the way, here goes.

I have become the 3rd owner of a 1995 E280 estate, green (put simply), and mushroom leather. It has covered over 350000 miles, but comes with an extensive service history. I did not actually test drive the car - that task fell to my brother who lived nearer to the seller.

I have had the car for a few days now and there is a list of cosmetic and possibly mechanical issues that need attention. Far from feeling disheartened at the prospect of sorting the car, I am feeling quite excited! A major reason for the optimism comes form all your postings detailing seemingly common W124 issues and solutions, communicated in a friendly and helpful spirit. I look forward to learning about the car through this forum and hope to share the experiences!

Welcome to the forum Mohammed!

Anyone like you who is keen to put time and effort in to getting the best out of their MB is a true enthusiast by my reckoning!

Thank you all.
Spent more time than most would consider healthy cleaning the interior of the car, resorting to umpteen rounds of warm water and washing up powder, carefully increasing the dilution, to cut through the layers of grime clinging onto all the surfaces. There were plenty of signs suggesting the previous owner had dogs that had become too attached to the estate!
That said, even in its uncleaned state, with all its canine signatures, the interior looked remarkably good, with the cream carpets retaining surprising lustre - admittedly, edges are a little darkened. In fact, I felt it somehow all added to the 'honesty' of the car.
Another round of cleaning awaits, this time applying a little more finesse and use of more conventional cleaning products referred to in the forum.
Hope provide some pictures.

Love the look of the W124 wagon with its huge expanses of glass compared to its descendants. Hope you can post some pictures and you resolve your niggles to your satisfaction! Very impressive mileage :bannana:

Wassalam. Technically, out of my depth, so will be glad to get a steer on many issues..

A friend of mine services a few W124 that have clocked over 500,000. He is not a 'merc specialist', but as a mechanic vouched for their durability, provided they have been looked after.

The previous owner my wagon for 13 years and spent a small fortune in that time. The gear change could be smoother, particularly as the auto appears unsure whether to change up/down in lower 2 gears, but it is quiet and higher gears are smooth. It is very quiet idling at 600rpm.
