Hi guys, im new here. I'm in facebook w204 group but is useless lol. So recently I bought my 1st Merc it's a 2008 w204 c220 CDI SPORT. Love the car and all, but been told the engine suffer from chain and injector problems? I have a documents from where when it was new, it says i got 646 engine and 5g tronic gearbox. Can't seem to find much info online either, can anyone shed a light. Is 5G Tronic a good box and what about 646 engine. Thanks:bannana:

Also looks like it blows out rear light bulbs lol quite often

Howdo.

If it is 646 it does not have the chain or injector issues. Strong engine. I have the same - 58 plate C220CDI. The 170bhp engine we have is known as the 646EVO

Not many people realise that until the blue efficiency cars came out in 2009/2010 C220s had the 646 EVO and not the 651.

There is a lot of 646 evo info out there but often comes under W203 searches.

5g box is very strong, make sure it has had the fluid change at 38k, if not get it done, 200 quid at an indy.

Can be a bit slow to change in C, but sharp enough in S and very smooth.

Personally I wish the 5th gear was just a bit longer.

You're right bud, the box isn't the fastest thing in this car but as long as it's reliable im fine. Thanks for the info bud, i heard a horror stories about the blue efficiency engines and went for the 08 plate one. The box oil was changed at 52k then again at 72k and cars is not at 92k so think it's due soon or shall i change it better at 110k? Cheers

IIRC gearbox "learns" driving style. So if previous owner was a slow driver the gearbox may have adjusted shift patterns accordingly. Gearbox can be reset to factory defaults. Last time I looked it up (can't remember which gearbox though and there may be slightly different techniques for different boxes) :-
Ignition on - accelerator to the floor & hold for minimum 15 seconds - ignition off - wait 3 minutes without using any electrics or opening doors.

Yeah it just resets to factory gear change points. The box should learn your style anyway eventually. If the fluid was done at 72 it should be fine for another 40k

Hi...rear light problems are usually a undersized earth wire from the light clusters, you can remove clusters and solder a bigger cable to the cluster metal track and attach other end of wire to a good body earth

My right rear brake bulb went tonight on my C350, not considering it as a problem yet as I have a merc pouch of spare bulbs in the boot.. :thumb:

Mostly I drive mine in C mode, especially when herself is with me. However, certain times - e.g. motorway slip roads - I will switch to S then back to C once I've joined the motorway and am cruising.

Cheers guys. What mode you drive yours in daily? Comfort or Sport mode?

Generally comfort/eco mode. Occasionally switch to sport when in the "mood":thumb:
