right i have just bought a mb 230te w124

it has a intermitent cut out problem

Occasionally the engine will cut out, which I've presumed is a faulty fuel sensor or something. The problem is intermittent whereas it won't do it for weeks, and then it'll act-up for a day or two, but it's never caused me any inconvenience. It's always re-started within 30-seconds.

would this be correct in the fuel side or is their somthing i should check first

As above - intermittent nature could be something like the fuel pump relay also.

just found out it only does it for the first run normally

but will check all the filters cheers

well it happend today

was going along @ 40 and the engine just died only noticed when i lost speed pulled over tried to start it but didnt fire tried again 30 seconds later and didnt fire waited about 20 seconds and it fired straight up and hasnt done it since

will be looking at the stariner in the tank as i think the fuel filter is new

My guess is the fuel pump relay - sounds like classic symptoms, easy to check if it happens again by bridging out the terminals.

what is the fuel tank level when it happens? always around the same? relay would be what i'd check

yes it seems to be arround 1/4 of a tank when it decides to act up

how to check the relay if it working most of the time and then only goes off for about a min then back on again

I would say the cause depends on how it cuts out.

Normally if it is fuel it would splutter to a halt, as the fuel already in the pipes gradually runs out.

However, if it is an electrical fault as if you have turned the ignition off and there is no spark to ignite the fuel; the engine will stop more suddenly.

Which is it ???????????????

it does not splutter to a hault

it will drive along fine one min and then die no lights come up on the dash as they would if it was stalled and when trying to start it will just turn the engine over and not fire or even attempt to fire untill 1 min has passed it is just like a kill switch has been activated

it has not done it when ticking over only when driving and always when it hits 1/4 of a tank hasnt done it when above 1/4 yet it will do it at running temp or below

is their a simple diagnostic check on these like the efi on pre 96 cars ?

it has had a full service @ 202972 miles and has done 205637 now

it had all filters replaced spark plugs and ht leads replaced but was doing this befor and after, has been into the garage a few times to rectify this problem to no avail each time they can not find whats wrong

no not tried the relay yet how would it be tested to see if it was that ?

it hasnt done it since the 24th but am about to come to 1/4 of a tank and done about 600 miles since

Tap the relay when it cuts out.

I would put my money on a relay

but by the time i get out and open bonnet it will start lol unless relay is inside

went past 1/4 tank yesterday and it didnt do it at all

i am waiting for it to do it again so i can see if i hear the fuel pump pressure up when i turn on the ignition but it wont start least that should let me know if it is a fuel / engine problem

Hi there , I had same problem on w123 230e and it was the pump relay . Replace the relay and forget about it !
