Hi every one I recently bought a 1988 300ce for £132 (see my photos in newbies) it's a nice looking motor that is now up and running(thanks to the link fuel pump relay dry joints). My question is I'm going to be fitting different newer model lights, bumpers, ect. The dash is my main concern as it looks dated has anyone ever fitted a newer dash (eg 2002 onwards) in an older merc and is there a wiring diagram to do such a mod??

The problem is that you are talking about 2 if not 3 generations of Mercedes here. In this period of time there was a huge revolution [not necessarily for the best] in car electrical circuits from conventional "wired"analogue electrical systems to digital canbus/databus controlled systems. It would be extremely difficult/ near impossible to try to do what you suggest sorry.

Hi grober I agree not easy. But surely to get from an analogue to digital signal takes a converter (like abs which coverts analouge to digital) all I need is the converter ( is it in the dash). With all the members surely we could work together and come up with a solution. I have a friend that owns a merc scrap yard. So where do we begin? Who is the best on the site for wiring. Does the canbus system have to be wired in? That's only a way of Reading the entire running system and reporting faults via the plug in system. All I want is the dash? This could either be very ambisuois or stupid? But the thought of the dash all lite up nice makes me want it?? A Challenge to be sure, but why not. (sort of off subject.I once wired an Astra gte mk2 digital dash into a cavalier mk2)

With all respect an Astra GTE dash is Very easy conversion.

What you are suggesting is near on impossible. You would need a complete donor car. You may as well change the engine and gearbox too, it would make life easier.

I don't understand why you'd do all this. Why not just buy the more modern car you like?

Agreed about the Astra/Cavalier Olly, I used to run GTE's in my younger days! It's virtually a straight swap, plug and play, hardly a rewiring job!

I agree astra gte dash into cav was easy but the point I was getting at is it is a digital dash that fits and works in the place of a normal type dash. I would like to do it for the challenge and to do something different.

it's not about going out and buying a modern car, that would make me the same as next door or The man across the road. sure I could put different wheels on but It will still be the same, why not be different?:dk:

As everyone says it may be to hard and expensive I was just seeing if anyone had done it or new a way of doing it.

Hi NW merc I'm in Newport area.

By all means have a go. It will empty your pockets....

If you just want to be different , why not go the other way and fit a retro interior from something like a Fintail (pics of mine below) or a W108 ? Technically it would be fairly straightforward .

I loved those vertical displays - gave the cars a really distinctive look- especially at night. Made them stand out from the traditional British dials or the American influenced Ribbon displays

Ok so I've just been to the scrap yard and I have a couple of choices. A 52 plate c class dash, or a 56 plate e class dash? Can any one cofirm if these run through the ecu? Think I may have been a little over confident if they do?

Think I will start with the body work first:crazy:

It's a really bad idea - leave the 124 dash in place :)

Don't encourage him...

If ibwas to buy a dash I wouldn't be so care free but the that he has said I could have one for nothing and if I burn it out so be it makes me want to continue. It will be on my list of to does but furher down the line. Body work first. Thanks for the support NW.
