New Motorway Cameras To Enforce Speed Limit

Thanks for the heads up; no timetable set for installation I see.

Thanks for the link David. Looks like they may appear in 2016, from the second article. And they seem like the ones already on the M25...the variable speed limit type with a big lit-up sign above the lane on the gantry.

But if the current ones were set to the speed limit shown plus 10% + 2mph, then wouldn't we have heard more about speeding fines? I'm sure on occasion I must have exceeded this and I've never received any speeding notices.... ???

I'm sure like all of us (oops, sorry, MOST of us) you have driven over those speeds. It's just that like with most of us the cameras haven't been monitoring those particular places at those particular times. So you (I mean WE) have been lucky.

It's all about road safety of course.

Well, I am prepared to believe we were just lucky, but I do question the long run of luck somewhat ;)

Indeed, what else? ;)

However, opening the hard shoulder in times of heavy traffic, and reducing the speed difference between slowest and fastest vehicles...I can see how this could help force more cars through a limited space in congested times.

If we saw the fines being used to keep our roads pothole-free then I think there would be slightly less scepticism.

So if I'm doing a steady 80mph for a few miles, I'd end up losing my licence?

I believe only one or two have ever been activated.

With digital technology that may well change. Doesn't really bother me, most of the time the lowered speed limits on the M25 appear aspirational as you sit motionless for seemingly hours.

That might explain it then.

I know what you mean, regarding the M25, but what concerns me is that this might roll out across the whole motorway network.

Don't most speedo's show a higher speed than your true speed if so points time will be ~85-88mph indicated on speedo?

But how do you know if you have a 'most speedos' speedo, or a special speedo that shows actual speed? Do they all under-represent the true speed?

If I'm speeding, quite frankly I will continue at that speed. The way to slow me down would be an instant ticket via SMS to the car, which would read it out to me so I am not distracted.

I've had a range over the years, short of proper timing over measured distances, I use the satnav indicated speed as a quick check against the speedo. Nowadays I doubt a Merc will show a huge variance from actual.

So you (I mean WE) have been lucky.

If you want to raise the maximum amount of revenue from cameras then you only enforce to a low %. Otherwise you discourage people too effectively so you have no 'customers'. 100% enforcement means almost no income.

Or so a cynic might think ....

My view is that some degree of enforcement is necessary but that enforcement without *immediate* feedback - either by a flash or an actual stop is bad practice.

I agree that speed cameras, while unpopular, are not necessarily a bad thing. Unlike death, but much like taxes...

And it is definitely preferable to having GPS trackers installed in our cars by the government..

As for variable speed limit, e.g. on the M25 Western stretch, I read some time ago that the speed cameras are only active when the variable speed is enforced, but they are switched off on all other occasions. This may have changed since, though.

I read somewhere that the cameras are not on all the time because the powers that be would be overwhelmed with work. They activate the over seventy function when they feel like it.

I may be making this up and there is no way to tell if they are on or off………... until the ticket arrives that is.

In some cases they even flash at over 100mph but no ticket.
