Fairly ironic seeing as the R129 (chassis code for the 4th generation SL) weighs almost 2 tonnes.

"Originally, SL stood for 'Sehr Leicht' or 'very light', but at some point in history this was comprimised to 'Sport Leicht', which was more realistic and offered fewer hostages to fortune or reputation. Rightly so, since by 1990 to W129 SL500 weighed 4,165lbs"

Mercedes Magazine, Summer 07, 'Family Values' article.

The 230 goes from 1910-2200 kg depending on the model and roughly the same as a 129, but the 129 was a touch more than the 230

I don't know who wrote that but I've never seen 'Sehr Leicht' in official print as a meaning for SL.

The R129 hardback brochure says
Their new car had a gross weight of only 850 kg. It was super-light and that is where its name comes from: SL.
