Hi, I have just taken delivery of a new e220d estate and have a question about the electric steering column movement. It moves fine but make a strange grinding noise when going up and down. It is silent when going in/out.

Sounds to me a bit like grit in the gears or something, has anyone else had this? As it is so minor and still moves ok I am not inclined to take it to dealer.

Thanks.

Hiya Speedman, welcome. Take it to the dealer, it's a genuine fault, and will only get worse. Let us know how you get on.

Thanks, that's what I thought. I have only done 100 miles so far so will give it a little while to see if anything else needs looking at as this is only a minor irritation.

Quick off-topic question - how much adblue should the car be delivered with. The gauge advises it is only a quarter full. I was expecting it to be full?

It should be full on delivery (mine was) and should last until around 10K. If the car goes back for the steering column I'd mention that also.

I'm not surprised they've delivered your new car and not noticed an obvious fault. The first new car I ever bought was a Mercedes and the buying experience was first class. After sales service however was abysmal in every respect. Mine had a distortion in the windscreen right in your line of sight and they had it changed by a mobile screen outfit. Sealant and stuff all over the dash and upholstery, missing clips from the scuttle etc. Went in because the near side front strut failed - took them two weeks to sort it out and they changed the offside one 'by mistake'. Diesel injector (x2) failed and both times they broke it off trying to remove it. Car was handed back every time (without fail) with oily hand prints on the upholstery on the door, on the passenger seat etc. One time I had to wait while they steam cleaned the drivers seat and then had to drive home sitting on bin bags with the heater and air con on full to try to dry it out! I still have three unopened service packs containing gloves and covers etc that they'd just left in the passenger footwell and not used. Radio on full blast on some bangra station or something, seat moved all over the place. They were so useless I sold the car. This was the main dealer in Leicester - not to mention the outrageous prices! The Subaru main dealer was exemplary in every respect....I would never ever use a merc dealer again. But then again I will never ever buy a new merc again so won't have to use the dealers for warranty etc. I do have an A Class as my runabout now but use a good independent garage. The Range Rover and Bentley dealers are great in my experience though.

Someone told me once that in the olden days people bought new cars from their local dealer based mostly on the dealer's reputation, and less on the marque.

I can definitely see why this makes sense...........
